Der Spiegel: Cabinet led by Scholz failed to enlist the support of the majority of German citizens
Yesterday marks a year since Olaf Scholz, previously chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), replaced Angela Merkel as Chancellor. According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, the ruling coalition, which first came to power in Germany through a merger of several parties (the SPD, the Alliance 90/Greens, and the Free Democratic Party), was unable to enlist the support of the German people. Citizens of Germany are dissatisfied with the work of each of the members of the current Cabinet.
So, according to a survey conducted by the Civey public opinion research institute, the highest percentage of trust in the Scholz government was received by Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock - 38%. The activities of the Minister of Economics Robert Habek are already assessed by 33% of respondents, although at the end of summer 45% of respondents were in favor of his support.
As for the ministers of health and labor, Karl Lauterbach and Hubertus Heil (comrades in the party of the current chancellor), only 33 and 31%, respectively, are satisfied with their work in their posts. Support for Scholz himself from the population is even lower - 26%, while in the spring this figure reached 40%.
The trend of people's dissatisfaction with the work of the head of the German government prevails mainly in East Germany. The authors of the publication also note that if elections to the Bundestag were held next weekend, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), of which Merkel is a member, would win with a result of 28%, followed by the Greens with 21%, and the SPD would be in third place. No more than 19% of voters would vote for this political formation.
Recall that the German politician and chairman of the European People's Party (EPP) Manfred Weber spoke earlier about the dissatisfaction of Europe against the backdrop of the ongoing flow of Ukrainian refugees. According to him, ahead is a difficult winter, which will create a lot of trouble for all European citizens, including the Germans themselves.
