US Congress warns Turkey not to allow unauthorized flights over Greece
The United States is alarmed by the deterioration of relations between Athens and Ankara in connection with the frequent flights of Turkish military aircraft over the islands in the Aegean Sea. The US Congress decided to send a warning to Turkey about the inadmissibility of unauthorized flights over Greek territory.
According to the message, NATO allies must not violate the airspace of other NATO allies. Senator Robert Menendez, who is still chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said earlier that he was not going to give Turkey permission to purchase F-16 fighters, including because of Ankara's policy towards Greece.
However, it was not possible to pass an amendment that would directly prevent the sale of F-16 fighters to Turkey in Congress. But the situation itself remains rather unpleasant for the US. Both Turkey and Greece are not just members of NATO, but the most important pillars of the alliance in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The outbreak of an armed conflict between the two countries, given their capabilities, as well as the presence of US military bases in the region, would be a disaster for the North Atlantic Alliance. Moreover, it would have crossed out the further NATO strategy in Ukraine. Therefore, it is now in Washington's interests to prevent a direct clash between Greece and Turkey by any means.
But the White House does not have many tools to put pressure on Ankara. One of these tools is threats not to sell certain types of weapons, primarily aircraft. Turkey was already deprived of the opportunity to participate in the program of the latest F-35 fighter after the purchase of the S-400 air defense system from Russia.
