By the end of the year, 60 VBMR-L Serval multi-purpose armored personnel carriers will enter service with the French army.
The French army continues to replace obsolete weapons and military equipment with the latest models, with priority being given to the supply of products from enterprises of its own military-industrial complex. In general, France is one of the few countries whose armed forces have an almost complete range of modern weapons and military equipment of their own production.
The General Directorate for Armaments (Direction Générale de l'Armement - DGA) of the French Ministry of Defense announced that 60 VBMR-L Serval multi-purpose armored personnel carriers will enter the army by the end of this year, which will be one fifth of the total planned number of armored vehicles in this series. In total, until 2030, the French Armed Forces will receive 900 Serval vehicles of various modifications, 364 of them have already been ordered.
The development and serial production of Serval armored personnel carriers is jointly carried out by the French defense companies Nexter and Texelis. Within ten years, the Ministry of Defense plans to completely replace the outdated VAB armored personnel carriers, the mass production of which was started back in 1976.
The Deputy Director General for International Relations of the French Ministry of Defense said at a briefing that the new equipment will soon enter service with the 11th Airborne Brigade and the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade.
The VBMR-L armored personnel carrier is one of four next-generation vehicles being developed under the French Scorpion program, along with the larger Griffon armored personnel carrier and its MEPAC variant, as well as the Jaguar reconnaissance and combat vehicle.
In total, the French Ministry of Defense intends to purchase 1872 Griffon vehicles, including 54 MEPACs, 978 Servals and 300 Jaguars by 2030. The Griffon and Serval vehicles will replace the outdated French VAB armored personnel carriers developed by Renault, while the Jaguar will replace three other armored vehicles: Giat's AMX-10RC, the Panhard ERC vehicle and the VAB HOT armored personnel carriers.
All-wheel drive 4x4 armored personnel carrier VBMR-L weighs from 15 to 17 tons, depending on the modification. The vehicle will be equipped with all the basic equipment of the Scorpion family, including sensors and the SICS combat information system, a new communication and battlefield control system for exchanging tactical information with other Scorpion vehicles. The armored personnel carrier can carry up to eight military personnel, plus two crew members.
So far, there is no such information, but it cannot be ruled out that, as they are replaced and decommissioned, the old French armored vehicles will be in service with the Ukrainian army. For NATO countries, this has already become a kind of familiar practice - to modernize their troops, giving out-of-date equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the very least, savings on conservation and disposal are very significant.
