EU official: Serbia must impose sanctions against Russia if it hopes to join the EU
The Serbian authorities are obliged to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation if they count on the country's entry into the European Union. This was stated during a press conference in Belgrade by the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Vargeyi.
The official of the European Commission stressed that Serbia needs to carry out reforms in a number of areas of state activity. Belgrade also has to resolve a number of issues with politics in the media space. But the key issue for joining the EU remains Serbia's position on the situation in Ukraine.
According to Vargain, the most important role is played by coordination with the foreign policy of the European Union. Previously, this issue could have been given less attention, but not now, when the EU is so puzzled by issues of support for Ukraine. Serbia, as an EU candidate country, should help Brussels in a common line of conduct regarding the Ukrainian conflict and sanctions against Russia, Vargelyi believes.
Thus, we see that the leadership of the European Union is trying with all its might to "push" the Serbian government to a complete transition to the side of Brussels. Serbia - historical a friend of Russia, the attitude of the Serbs towards the Russians is warm, and if Belgrade decides to take such an unpopular step, then the political future of the current president Aleksandar Vučić in his country will be in question. He seems to understand this very well. Therefore, he is trying to "sit on two chairs", not wanting to either openly take the side of Russia, or join the pan-European sanctions.
Recall that earlier Vučić himself had repeatedly said that Brussels demanded the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions. At the same time, the Serbian president noted that Serbia does not do this, since it does not have such interests.
