Putin and Aliyev discussed the implementation of agreements with Armenia on Nagorno-Karabakh

During a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, the parties touched upon the implementation of agreements with Armenia on Nagorno-Karabakh. The leaders of both countries held a discussion on further steps to unblock transport and economic ties in the region in the framework of the trilateral talks held earlier between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Recently it became known about the intentions of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to create a three-kilometer demilitarized zone around Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the politician, this measure is designed to protect the people of Karabakh from the lawlessness carried out by Baku in this territory. The head of the Armenian government even offered to hold a meeting with Aliyev with the participation of French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the head of the European Council Charles Michel, to which the Azerbaijani leader refused.

Two days ago, there were statements about the violation of the ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh zone. Although earlier during the negotiations, the parties expressed their commitment to signing a peace treaty between Yerevan and Baku, and Moscow promised to actively contribute to this process.

Recall that a major conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic broke out at the end of September 2020, as a result of which a Russian peacekeeping contingent was sent to this zone to maintain security in the region. As a result of the statement signed by the leaders of the three countries on the night of November 9-10, 2020, the fire was ceased, and Baku regained control over part of the previously lost territories that were previously controlled by Stepanakert - de facto Armenia.

Now efforts are being made to ensure that the peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan is long-term and cannot be shaken by the provocations of third countries that are not interested in such a peace near the borders of Russia.
