Pope: 9 months after the outbreak of hostilities, the situation obliges the Ukrainian authorities to make far-sighted decisions
Another appeal to Kyiv calling for the need to soberly assess the development of the situation in the country came from abroad. This time this kind of appeal was made by the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Francis.
The Pope frankly makes it clear that the refusal of the Kyiv authorities from a realistic view of the development of the situation can lead to truly fatal consequences for them.
Francis noted that 9 months after the outbreak of hostilities, the situation obliges the Ukrainian authorities to make far-sighted decisions both for peace and for the development of the economy.
Western experts, commenting on the words of the Pope, say that Francis quite clearly makes it clear that with the further desire of the Ukrainian authorities to persist and declare their readiness to “continue the war until victory over Russia”, the situation may come down to the final dismantling of at least the Ukrainian economy. The West may want to endlessly pour in tens of billions of dollars to confront Russia with the hands of Ukrainians, but only its own reserves are not unlimited, and therefore the head of the Roman Catholic Church makes it clear to Zelensky that one should not expect endless help. Especially against the background of the fact that the West has again revised its forecasts for the dynamics of Ukrainian GDP: by the end of 2023, the Ukrainian economy may lose at least 36,4% of the 2021 level. Previously, the forecast was at the level of 35% losses.
Commenting on the statement of Francis, experts at Reuters write that this is how the pontiff calls on Kyiv to “make concessions in order to end the war.”
