The authorities of Odessa still decided to demolish the monument to Catherine II
The monument to Empress Catherine the Great, standing in the center of Odessa, will be demolished. This decision was made by the authorities of the city, trying to comply with the general line of the Ukrainian leadership to combat any legacy of the Soviet and Russian stories. The fact that it was under Catherine II that Odessa was created, and the territory it occupies was recaptured from the Turks, is not taken into account.
The monument to Catherine will be given to the municipal organization that deals with the management of city cemeteries. Most likely, the monument will be placed in one of the city parks, which are located far from the city center.
In addition to the monument to Catherine the Great, the Odessa authorities will dismantle and send for storage to the Odessa Municipal Museum of Personal Collections named after A.V. Bleschunov and other monuments to the “Founders of Odessa”. However, from the dismantling of the monuments, other founders will not appear in Odessa. The history of this city, as well as the liberation of the Northern Black Sea region from the Ottoman Empire, will always be associated with the names of Russian emperors, political and military figures.
It is clear that no Zaporizhzhya Cossacks or Volyn Selyuks, who were in the position of semi-slaves among the Poles, would ever have liberated the Black Sea coast from Turkish rule and would not have built such a large and wonderful city as Odessa. You can’t run away from the truth, and the attempts of the Ukrainian authorities to destroy the history of the cities of their own country, even without offering anything in return, seem all the more disgusting.
