Residents of Moldova expressed their opinion on joining Romania and NATO
According to a survey conducted by the non-governmental organization (NGO) IDIS “Viitorul”, together with the CBS Axa sociological research center and the Academy of Romania, the majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova still do not agree with their country's membership in NATO and joining Romania.
Thus, if a referendum were held in the near future regarding the accession of Moldova to neighboring Romania, 57,5% of people with the right to vote would vote against this decision. At the same time, the number of all respondents is 47,4%. The unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania was supported by 42,5% of respondents (35% of the total number of respondents). The lowest rate of those who would not want to see Moldova as part of Romania was at only 3% in 2010, but since then this figure has increased rapidly, after an alliance openly promoting European integration came to power in 2009.
As for joining the North Atlantic alliance, the alignment is as follows: 70,9% of people with the right to vote opposed this decision (in 2004, the number of people who wanted to see their country as a member of the military bloc fluctuated at the level of 35%), so the mood of people in this regard practically remain at the same level after almost two decades.
Moreover, when asked whom the residents of Moldova see as an ally from whom they could receive military assistance, 20,8% considered Romania. Fewer people voted for the EU (16,5%), while no more than 13,5% of the population of the republic relied on NATO assistance. 3,8% and 3% of people, respectively, would like to count on the help of Russia and Ukraine in the event of hostilities.
It should be noted that as soon as Romania granted the citizens of the Republic of Moldova the right to obtain Romanian passports in order to officially find a job in the EU countries, the inhabitants of the republic skillfully took advantage of this opportunity. Some officials from the then leadership of the country even spoke out that if approximately half of all Moldovans have citizenship, the country will be able to automatically unite with Romania.
