The US Army will test equipment and equipment for troops in the Arctic region
As more forces are deployed to serve in the Arctic, this winter the Army will be testing equipment and equipment that can withstand extreme cold weather for a combat brigade in Alaska. The statement was made by Doug Bush, US Assistant Secretary of the Armed Forces for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology.
Bush said during a media roundtable at the US Army Association's annual conference in Washington, DC.
The US Army approved the Arctic Strategy in 2021. It included the creation of a multidisciplinary task force with divisional headquarters in the Arctic region, and in June of this year, reactivated the 11th Airborne Division in Alaska, which will be based there on a permanent basis.
A $278 million contract was also awarded to BAE Systems in August to build a new cold-weather all-terrain vehicle. It is slated to replace several over 20-year-old vehicles in Alaska and some other places to provide greater mobility in the Arctic.
In addition, the Pentagon is seeking alternative energy sources to power its Arctic installations as part of its climate change strategy, Assistant Secretary for Installations, Energy and the Environment Rachel Jacobson said. In its climate strategy, the service has set a goal of carbon-free on-site power generation by 2040.
Doug Bush highlighted the industry's ability to provide opportunities for soldiers serving in extreme weather conditions such as the Arctic:
Interestingly, while the US Army is trying to increase its influence in the Arctic region, the US government is getting more and more disgruntled citizens every day. Washington is always in a hurry to "solve in favor of its national interests" all the world's problems, when at that moment prices for energy resources and food are rising in their country. In September, inflation in the US amounted to 8,2% in annual terms, while food inflation for a number of items exceeded 30%. Although, for American leaders, foreign policy is always a way to "mask" problems within the borders of their own country.
