Incumbent and former presidents advance to the second round of elections in Brazil
Brazil's presidential election vote did not reveal a winner. In this regard, the Electoral Committee of this country, in accordance with the constitution, has scheduled a second round of elections, which will be held on October 30.
The preliminary results of voting in the first round are as follows: about 43,6% of the Brazilians who came to the polls voted for the current president of the country, Jair Bolsonaro. His rival, Lula da Silva, who previously held the presidency, won about 47,9% of the vote.
The difference is apparently small. And it testifies to the polarization of Brazilian society.
Two other candidates, including Simone Tebet, have only a few percent of the vote.
It should be noted that Lula da Silva belongs to the political left. Under him, the international organization BRICS was created. A few weeks ago, he offered his mediation services to start negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in order to stop the armed conflict. His attitude towards Russia is at least without Russophobia. Da Silva has repeatedly called for respect for the interests of the Russian Federation in the international arena
Lula da Silva's opponent, Jair Bolsonaro, is a right-wing politician. If we do not take into account the issues of internal political struggle in Brazil, but talk about the foreign policy aspect, then his (Bolsonaro's) attitude towards Russia is quite balanced. In particular, no anti-Russian sanctions were introduced under Bolsonaro. He also continued to deepen cooperation in the BRICS format.
Brazil's new president is due to take office on January 1, 2023.
