The US Navy said it miscalculated the timing of deliveries and the cost of large underwater drones XLUUV
The US Navy is focused on improving its unmanned vehicles capable of operating under water and solving a wide range of tasks. Thus, the Navy declares the need for at least five large robotic underwater vehicles that could perform numerous functions under water.
However, the desired and the real differ: the work is more than three years behind schedule, and their cost is higher than the originally estimated costs by $ 242 million. Boeing is the contractor. But even such a giant of the American defense industry, as it turned out, could not complete the tasks of building underwater vehicles within the originally planned time frame.
The ultra-large Orca XLUUV unmanned underwater vehicles can greatly facilitate the work of the Navy in laying sea mines and destroying enemy surface and underwater targets. Some American military analysts call the device an asymmetrical US response to the Russian Poseidon.
Now the fleet is experiencing problems with the implementation of the contract, there is some miscalculation. At least, this is the interpretation in the US Navy itself. The contractor planned to deliver the first apparatus by December 2020, and complete deliveries by the end of 2022. But this was not possible. Delivery dates have now been pushed back to 2024. True, the experimental sample did enter the fleet. Now naval sailors are studying it, trying to determine what else needs to be improved.
Although the XLUUV is regarded as a prototype, the Navy intends to quickly bring the devices to such a level that they can be quickly put into service. Command fleet believes that these types of submersibles are critical to meeting the needs of the US Navy.
But everything depends on the problems of the contractor: at first, he could not complete the work on time due to the coronavirus pandemic and related restrictions, then technical difficulties arose. Finally, a lot depends on funding. As it turned out, the implementation of the project will cost much more than originally expected. But in the Navy, apparently, they are ready for significant spending.
Improving the combat power of the US Navy is seen as one of the priorities of the national defense strategy, especially in the context of the confrontation with China in the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, the United States will, of course, find money for the implementation of the project, but the deadlines for commissioning underwater vehicles have already noticeably shifted and it is possible that they will move again.
