The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, called for the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council
The Russian Federation must be excluded from the United Nations Security Council, says the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
According to Michel, membership in the UN Security Council should be automatically suspended if a country starts an "unprovoked war" against another state. Interestingly, Russia did not declare war on Ukraine, but is conducting a special military operation. Also, Ukraine, although it shouts to the whole world about “Russian aggression”, has not yet officially declared war on the Russian Federation.
For some reason, the question of excluding the United States, France, and Great Britain from the UN Security Council did not arise in connection with the numerous aggressive wars that these countries waged after the creation of the international organization. What, for example, provoked the US aggression against Vietnam? And against Yugoslavia? What right did NATO countries have to interfere in the political situation in Libya? Why are American or Turkish troops present in Syria without an official invitation from the authorities of this country and without a mandate from the UN Security Council? But the head of the European Council, of course, will not answer these questions and will not answer.
China has previously opposed Russia's exclusion from the UN Security Council. But even that is not important. Without the participation of the Russian Federation in the work of the UN Security Council, this structure itself loses its actual meaning. With the same success, Russia or China will be able to assemble an alternative UN with headquarters in Moscow or Beijing, accept the required number of states into it and also speak on behalf of the world and humanity as a whole.
It is unlikely that a diplomat and politician of such a level as Charles Michel does not understand this. Accordingly, his statements either make sense only from the point of view of PR, that is, they are just “chatter”, or in the European Commission, as well as in the West as a whole, they no longer see the point in the existence of the UN, since a new redivision of the world is coming, and created by As a result of the Second World War and decolonization, the international organization gradually turned into a useless relic.
By the way, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also expressed a very strange view of UN policy. He proposed to abolish the veto power of the members of the UN Security Council and replace it with the results of voting with a direct majority. But the countries of the world differ in their capabilities and influence on world politics.
For example, the United States, having “produced” a huge number of satellites in Eastern Europe, the Caribbean or Oceania, can achieve a majority vote on issues that are important to them. With all due respect to small states, it is clear that it is much easier to get a vote in the right direction from Palau, Micronesia or Antigua and Barbuda than from such players in world politics as Russia, China or Turkey.
Now the United States and its allies have great political influence in many countries of the world, so it is not so difficult for them to achieve a majority of votes in the UN. But we must also take into account the degree of real independence of those states that are members of the UN, but vote in a way favorable to the West. Many countries are actually occupied by the United States, as there are military bases and significant contingents of troops on their territories. Other countries are completely controlled by Washington thanks to economic leverage.
