The first Ada-class corvette, being built for the Ukrainian Navy in Turkey, was named after Hetman Mazepa. The corresponding decree was signed by the President of Ukraine Zelensky.
As reported on the website of the Ukrainian president, the name of the corvette was chosen taking into account historical traditions of Ukraine, as well as to perpetuate the memory of "an outstanding Ukrainian politician".
- the decree says.
The first corvette for the Ukrainian Navy was laid down in September last year at one of the shipyards in Istanbul. It was planned that this year the corvette would be towed to one of the shipyards in Ukraine, where it was to be completed and equipped. However, in connection with the special military operation of the Russian army in Ukraine, all plans were violated and it is currently unknown how Kyiv intends to complete the construction of the ship.
According to the statement of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Navy Oleksiy Neizhpapa, to become part of the Ukrainian fleet the first corvette was due in 2024. As previously stated in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, corvettes for the Ukrainian Navy will be armed with Harpoon anti-ship missiles, VL MICA air defense systems, OTO Melara Super Rapid (76 mm) and Millennium (35 mm) artillery mounts, as well as 12,7 mm Aselsan machine gun mounts STAMP. Anti-submarine armament will consist of a 324-mm torpedo tube or tubes with Murene 90 Impact torpedoes.
