Cyprus has banned entry to the ports of the Republic of warships of the Russian Navy, thereby revoking previously issued permits. This is reported by the Cypriot newspaper Phileleftheros, citing diplomatic sources.
A notice about the ban on entering the port of Limassol and other ports of the Republic of Cyprus was sent to Moscow on March 2, according to the newspaper, this is a Russian frigate and four "support boats", according to the Russian embassy - four warships of the Russian fleet. It is emphasized that each ship previously received permission separately.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed Russia in a verbal statement that due to the events in Ukraine, the agreement on the provision of service facilities and the mooring permit cannot be executed
- writes the edition.
It is emphasized that the refusal was adopted "in the spirit" of the latest decisions of Brussels regarding the extension of measures against Russia, in particular the closure of ports for Russian ships and vessels, and airspace for Russian aircraft.
The Russian Ministry of Defense does not comment on the refusal of the Cypriot side. The Americans have long been seeking a ban on Russian ships entering Cyprus, where they are resupplying food and fuel. In exchange, Washington promises Nicosia to lift the arms embargo. Earlier, the US State Department repeatedly stated that the White House was "deeply disappointed" with the admission of Russian warships to the ports of Cyprus.
