French press: Without waiting for Russia's "attack" on Ukraine, the United States decided to convene the UN Security Council
The United States requested a meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine, although they had previously promised to convene it only in the event of an escalation of hostilities. This is written by the French edition of Le Monde.
The United States did not wait for the Russian attack on Ukraine, deciding to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on January 31, 2022. The topic of the meeting, as you might guess, will be Russia and its plans to "capture" Ukraine. Apparently, Washington has decided not to wait any longer for the "invasion" to start, moving forward the date of its start, but to blame Russia in advance, bringing this topic up for discussion by the UN.
As US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield said on this occasion, Russia will be blamed for the concentration of 100 soldiers near the Ukrainian border, as well as other actions that destabilize Ukraine and pose a threat to "peace, international security and the UN charter." Washington intends to present to the members of the UN Security Council all the facts that speak of Russia's destabilizing role in the world.
Initially, the United States intended to hold a meeting of the Security Council this Friday, but then French President Emmanuel Macron wanted to talk on the phone with Vladimir Putin, which broke all the plans of the Americans. The meeting had to be postponed to Monday, January 31 - this is the last day when Norway chairs the UN Security Council, from February 1 the chairmanship passes to Russia. According to the US, next month it will be much more difficult to convene a meeting of the Security Council on the topic of Ukraine.
At the same time, the United States understands that no matter what decision they make, Russia, using its right, will veto it. However, she will be isolated in front of a united front of other members of the Security Council condemning her, said US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield.
