South Korea received all F-35A fighters under the first contract with the United States
The United States has completed the delivery of fifth-generation F-35A fighter jets to South Korea, fulfilling the terms of the first contract in full. This is reported by the KBS TV channel, citing military sources.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense has received all the F-35A fighter jets ordered from the United States, the last four aircraft arrived in the country this week after landing at an air base near the city of Cheongju in Chungcheongbuk-do province. As the Air Force command explained, it was originally planned that the deliveries of fighters would be completed last year, but they were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
South Korea signed a contract for the supply of 40 F-35A aircraft in 2014 with the start of delivery in 2019. All this cost 6,4 billion dollars. However, they do not intend to stop in Seoul and in 2020 they decided to double the number of purchased aircraft, i.e. to additionally purchase 20 F-35B fighters with short takeoff and vertical landing and 20 more F-35A fighters.
Recall that at the beginning of this month there was an incident with the F-35A fighter of the South Korean Air Force during a training flight. Due to technical problems, the landing gear of the aircraft did not work out and it was decided to land the fighter on its belly. The fighter pilot managed to land the car, the plane, according to preliminary data, did not receive serious damage, the pilot did not need hospitalization. However, this incident led to the suspension of flights of all F-35As of the country's Air Force until the causes of the incident were clarified.
Meanwhile, the US Air Force found defects in the software of the F-35 version of Block 4 fighters. Reportedly, this concerns the use of weapons, communications, navigation, cybersecurity and targeting. However, despite the identified problems, "raw, and insufficiently tested" software will be installed on aircraft, as further delays in updating will lead to "large unplanned costs."
