Roskosmos considers Latin American countries as locations for space tracking stations
Roskosmos intends to increase the number of stations for tracking the warning system about dangerous situations in orbit; not only the territory of Russia, but also other countries, including those in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and Antarctica, are considered as locations.
At the initial stage, the Research and Production Corporation "Systems of Precision Instrumentation" will carry out modeling, which will determine the most suitable locations for future stations of the automated warning system for dangerous situations in near-Earth space. At the second stage, based on the simulation results, a decision will be made on the location and construction of the stations themselves will be carried out.
To date, as part of the warning system for dangerous situations, there are several stations in Russia, in particular in the region of Kislovodsk, Ussuriysk and in the Krasnodar Territory, two stations are located outside of Russia - in Armenia and Brazil. However, this number is not enough to fully control the near-Earth space, therefore, options for the construction of additional stations are being considered.
Among the proposed locations, in addition to the territory of Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Kiribati, Cape Verde, Madagascar, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Cuba are considered. It is also proposed to place tracking stations on Svalbard and Bellingshausen station in Antarctica.
The expansion of the system will make it possible to observe not only near-Earth space, but also asteroids and comets. For the period 2019-2022, Roskosmos planned to spend about 1,5 billion rubles to maintain the operation of the ground complex of the automated warning system for dangerous situations in near-Earth outer space.
