German Foreign Minister urged the West not to confuse Ukraine with NATO territory

Western states are not bound by allied obligations with Ukraine, since it is not a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. Therefore, German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock called on the West not to confuse Ukraine with NATO territory.
She stated this during a meeting of the EU Council.
The German Foreign Minister noted that the North Atlantic Alliance is in solidarity with Kiev, but its priority is not the defense of Ukraine, but the security of NATO member countries. This means that assistance to Kiev should not be provided to the detriment of the interests of the alliance states. Therefore, response measures to threats need to be differentiated.
This statement by Burbock was made in response to a question from one of the journalists about a possible increase in the military presence of Germany in Eastern Europe.
The head of the German Foreign Ministry also said that Berlin is not going to curtail its diplomatic mission in Kiev. At the same time, she noted that Germany, together with other European countries, is developing a set of measures in case the situation worsens.
Shortly before that, the US State Department decided to evacuate the families of American diplomats from Ukraine. In addition, embassy staff were allowed, if they so desired, to leave Kiev and depart for the United States.
