The Danish Ministry of Defense is considering the possibility of sending troops to the island of Bornholm "in connection with the military activity of the Russian Federation"
Against the background of the transfer of an additional number of Swedish troops and several armored vehicles to the island of Gotland, the question of a possible "strengthening of the military component on the islands in the Baltic Sea" is being raised in Denmark. Local media report that the military department of this country, which, unlike Sweden, is a member of NATO, is discussing the issue of a possible dispatch of a contingent to the island of Bornholm.
It should be pointed out that the island of Bornholm is located at a relative distance from, so to speak, the continental part of Denmark. Much closer from it to Poland (less than 100 km) and Sweden (less than 40 km). Not far from Bornholm, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline passes, the construction permit for which in this area the operator has been seeking from Copenhagen for a very long period of time.
Danish military experts are discussing the situation with the expediency of transferring troops to the island of Bornholm "in connection with the military activity of the Russian Federation in the Baltic Sea."
The Danish newspaper Politiken writes:
Associate Professor of Military Studies at the Royal Danish Defense College Peter Viggo Jacobsen, commenting on the situation, says that the introduction of Swedish troops on the island of Gotland should not be taken as a signal from Denmark to send troops to Bornholm. At the same time, the military expert notes that such an option is considered by the country's defense department as probable.
Additionally, it is noted that Denmark's actions to allocate 22 million euros to provide military assistance to Ukraine may cause a negative reaction from Russia. And, as Danish journalists write, Copenhagen needs to be ready for this.
