Komlev is landing his IL-2 in a clearing in the wilderness.
It would seem that the worst is behind - alive. Wounded, without an airplane and provisions, he simply has to get home, where his beloved is waiting for him in a warm, comfortable room. But these are just dreams. In the meantime, a difficult path awaits him, surrounded by an inhospitable Russian winter and hungry wolves. Hunger, creaking frost and piercing pain are not so bad, a Nazi detachment is on the trail of Nikolai. Being behind enemy lines, the pilot has only one chance to survive - to take to the skies again to win the final victory over the enemy.

Nikolai Komlev, the main character of the film, had a real prototype - Alexei Petrovich Maresyev. He really was a front-line pilot who received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Maresyev made 86 sorties, destroyed more than 10 German aircraft. Even after the events described in the film, due to the severe injury of both legs, this courageous man continued to fight for the Motherland. The incredible fortitude and heroism of Alexei Petrovich formed the basis of "The Tale of a Real Man", written by Boris Polev.
For Renat Davletyarov, director and screenwriter of the picture, the film on a military theme is not the first, but very significant. He said that since childhood he had been interested in aircraft from the times of the Great Patriotic War, and in the process of working on the "Pilot" he became even more immersed in the topic. After all, the IL-2, which was controlled by the hero of the picture, became as legendary as the famous T-34 tank. And to make a movie about a legend is a real dream of any director.
Interestingly, among the locations where the filming took place was the Demyansky district, located in the Novgorod region. It was there that back in 1941 the plane of Alexei Petrovich Maresyev was shot down.
