State tests of the Ukrainian multipurpose fighter MiG-29MU2 postponed to 2022
The completion of state tests of the MiG-29MU2 fighter being developed in Lviv is postponed to 2022. Dmytro Matrunchik, director of the Lviv State Aviation Repair Plant, spoke about this.
Since Ukraine is not able to purchase new and modern fighters, and the available aircraft fleet is already significantly outdated, Lviv decided to develop a new MiG-29MU1 fighter on the basis of the MiG-29MU2 fighter in service with the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, calling it the MiG-29MUXNUMX. In fact, as explained at the Lviv aircraft plant, the task is to turn the classic Soviet MiG-XNUMX into a universal "truly multipurpose" aircraft capable of gaining air superiority and striking ground targets.
Work on the development of the fighter modernization project began in 2018 and continues to this day. In the spring of this year, the Lviv aircraft plant announced that it had entered the final straight state tests, which were supposed to be completed by the end of this year, but were postponed to 2022. The reason for this is not named, but is most likely associated with underfunding. The company has already complained about the lack of orders from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Despite the lack of funds, Lviv hopes that the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, based on the results of state tests of the MiG-29MU2, will take it into service, which means it will provide the Lviv aircraft plant with orders for a long time, since the modernization of the entire MiG-29 fleet of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is carried out in Lviv.
According to the information portal FlightGlobal, there are 43 MiG-29 light fighters in the combat composition of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As previously reported in the press service of the Lviv aircraft plant, almost all the MiG-29 fighters in Ukraine have been overhauled over the past 7 years.
