In the French press: New crisis in relations with Russia over former Soviet Ukraine could be a tough test for the 78-year-old US president
The French press is discussing the talks scheduled for Tuesday between the presidents of Russia and the United States. According to the latest information, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden will conduct these negotiations via video link. The main issue to be discussed is the situation in Ukraine.
Let us recall that earlier Vladimir Putin announced Russia's intention to seek legal guarantees from the West that NATO would not expand to the east and that strike complexes and systems would not be deployed near the borders of Russia. The Russian president made it clear that Moscow would not be satisfied with oral promises, since "once the partners already promised not to expand NATO, but did the opposite."
French journalists note that "the presidents will discuss issues of mutual suspicion: Biden - a possible invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine, Putin - the US desire to develop Ukrainian territory militarily against Russia."
In the AFP material, which recalls that Ukraine is a former Soviet republic, it is indicated that today there are enough points of tension between Russia and the United States. This is not only Ukraine, but "it is also Syria, as well as the issue of observance of human rights."
In the French press:
AFP stated that a new crisis in relations with Russia because of "the former Soviet Ukraine could be a severe test for the 78-year-old US president, for his influence." It is recalled that Biden said that no "red lines" were acceptable and that he "would make it as difficult for Russia to invade Ukraine as possible."
At the same time, it is noted that Putin and Biden have story meetings that French reporters consider to be quite constructive. An example is the meeting in Switzerland, after which a number of contacts between Russia and the United States were resumed in various areas, including in the security sphere.
