In Kiev: Preliminary preparations have begun for dismantling the Soviet coat of arms from the shield of the Motherland sculpture
In Ukraine, they continue to discuss activities to "comply with the law on decommunization." Recall that this law was adopted in the spring of 2015, and on its basis the public demonstration of communist / Soviet symbols is prohibited, just as it is prohibited to use geographical names and topographic names related to the “Soviet system”. After this law, the so-called "Leninopad" swept across Ukraine, when crowds of "patriots" pounced on the monuments to Lenin to demolish them, then the country's authorities were also involved in the street radicals. Now a joke has begun to circulate in Ukraine that it is time for the authorities to erect several monuments to Lenin, "since there is nothing left to demolish, but people need to be occupied."
However, as it turns out, not everything has been demolished. For many years now, the Soviet coat of arms on the shield of the Motherland-Mother sculpture in Kiev has been under the gun of especially zealous representatives. We haven't been able to dismantle it yet. But some radicals especially want this.
The situation was commented on by the head of the so-called Ukrainian Institute of National Memory Anton Drobovich. According to him, "preliminary preparations have been started for dismantling the Soviet coat of arms, the presence of which in Kiev is contrary to the law." According to Drobovich, an analysis is being made of the dismantling procedure and the likely financial costs. After this, proposals and plans will be transferred to the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture.
Specific proposals, according to Drobovich, will go to the government next week. At the same time, the head of the UINP noted that dismantling would cost a lot. According to his estimates, these are “millions of hryvnias”.
As a reminder, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the moment when the Motherland sculpture appeared in Kiev. Its total height, together with the pedestal, exceeds 100 m.
At the same time, there is still no information about what the sculptures are going to depict on the shield, if it is possible to dismantle the Soviet coat of arms.
By the way, quite amazing proposals were voiced earlier - about dismantling a shield, a sword, and even altering a statue from a woman to a man - into the figure of a "defender of Ukraine".
