In the United States, there is a debate about the need to create a Space National Guard
26
In America, proponents of the Space National Guard argue that it will be critical to maintaining the United States' competitive advantage in space. The Biden administration strongly disagrees with this opinion, arguing that the new organization will not create new opportunities, but a new government bureaucratic structure.
Congressmen differ on whether to create a Space National Guard separate from the United States Air Force National Guard and the Air Force Reserve.
In July 2021, the US Senate Armed Services Committee voted to simply rename the National Air Guard as Aerospace. On the other hand, a similar committee in the House of Representatives of Congress wants to create a completely separate Space National Guard, making it special.
The Congressional Budget Office says the structure could cost US taxpayers $ 500 million a year, with one-time facility and equipment costs ranging from $ 400 million to $ 900 million.
Members of Congress Doug Lambourne and Jason Crowe were the initiators of the National Space Guard Act. Its main purpose is to form a reserve for the US Space Force.
Experts in the United States, meanwhile, note that such an initiative should be considered for the presence of a corruption component, which they are trying to hide behind a cover of concerns about space security.
