The newest French nuclear submarine of the Barracuda project reveals problems with the power plant
Underwater update fleet The French Navy appears to be postponed for the time being. The fact is that on the newest French nuclear submarine of the Barracuda project, problems with the power plant were found.
This is reported by the newspaper L'Opinion.
The French edition notes that due to technical problems with the latest submarine, the French will have to postpone the decommissioning of Rubis class submarines, which have already served for about 30 years.
The defect was discovered on the first multipurpose submarine Suffren, belonging to the new project (program) Barracuda. It led to the fact that the submarine had to be operated in a "sparing" mode, not allowing it to fully use its capabilities.
The power plant of the battleship includes a nuclear reactor, two turbo reducers and a water jet engine. It was found that there was a leak in at least one turbine, which forced the technicians to use plastic "patches".
Due to problems with the submarine, the crew has to use the power plant, limiting the power, and also be careful when driving the submarine at high speed.
The main feature of the new series of Barracuda submarines is their stealth. The first submarine of the series, Suffren, is now based in Toulon. She has a total displacement of 5,3 thousand tons. Crew - 60 people. Swimming autonomy - 50 days. The maximum immersion depth is 410 m.
