American edition: US would like to use Russian military bases near Afghanistan
The US military would like to use Russian military bases in Central Asia to support military operations in Afghanistan. Such a possibility was discussed at a meeting of the Russian military command with the American, the Wall Street Journal claims, citing unnamed sources.
According to the newspaper, the possibility of the Americans using Russian military bases near Afghanistan was allegedly discussed last week during a meeting in Finland between the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, General Mark Milli, with Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov. It is noted that Moscow has not given any promises to Washington.
There is also an assumption that this topic is not being raised for the first time. Initially, the Americans cast the bait for the use of Russian bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan at the meeting between Biden and Putin, which took place in Geneva in June. However, the Kremlin does not comment on the information that has appeared, the newspaper writes.
According to WSJ sources, the United States is forced to turn to Russia, since it does not have any other means of promptly responding to "terrorist threats" in Afghanistan. After a rapid flight from the country, the United States has no military bases in the region. The closest base from which the US can "work" on Afghanistan is Qatar, which is too far away to make operations relatively cheap.
It should be reminded that all attempts by the United States to gain a foothold in the region ended in failure; virtually all of Afghanistan's neighbors, to whom they turned, consistently refused to deploy the American military.
