American Press: US Waging Cold War on Two Fronts May Not Endure
The United States has once again declared Russia and China as the main threats to the country's security. However, the United States may not be able to withstand a cold war on two fronts, says Ted Carpenter, author of an article for The American Conservative.
The United States is on bad terms with both Russia and China, the author writes. However, with this approach, the American authorities only complicate their lives, mistakes in foreign policy can lead to a dangerous situation.
Washington is trying to confront two geopolitical adversaries at once, but such a situation could threaten the security of America, Carpenter said. Therefore, the Biden administration needs to make several important decisions that will help in the future.
The United States needs to determine the main adversary, choosing either Russia or China as it, and not oppose two at once, the author claims. By opposing both Moscow and Beijing, Washington makes itself worse by forcing its opponents to draw closer. Therefore, the United States needs to restore relations with one of these countries, and confront the other. It would be much better if Washington restored relations with both countries, but the White House will not agree to this, the US needs an enemy, as the observer writes.
The author himself is inclined to choose Russia as a probable ally, since, in his opinion, China is a stronger adversary. Thus, the US administration needs to restore friendly relations with Moscow as soon as possible.
Otherwise, the United States may not be able to withstand the conduct of the Cold War on two fronts with a probable transition to the hot phase, he sums up.
