National Interest tried to analyze the modernization of the Russian T-90M tank

57

The United States has always had a great interest in Russian military equipment: a potential adversary, after all. Naturally, the recently held international military forum "Army-2021" also did not remain without increased attention from the American press. For example, the author of The National Interest magazine Mark Episkopos was interested in Russia's plans to release the main combat tank T-90M, which can also be produced for export purposes. The American author tried to analyze modernization.

The first batch of T-90M tanks was delivered to the tank army of the Western Military District in April 2020. These were early models that did not have a new electro-optical protection system presented at the forum. The Russian military department is currently evaluating a new modification of the tank, and the final decision on the procurement of a combat vehicle will be made based on the results of state tests.

At the same time, it is not very clear what exactly will be modernized in the T-90. After all, the previous versions of the tank were equipped with the Shtora-1 electro-optical protection system. As Episkopos emphasizes, the Russian T-90M tanks represent the latest modification of the T-90 main battle tank, supplied to the troops since 1993. Version "M" has a modernized design of the turret with the fire control system "Kalina", it has more effective armor, the newest version of the 125-mm smoothbore cannon 2A46M.

Currently, the Ground Forces of the RF Armed Forces already have about 20 T-90M tanks. Such a small number of tanks, according to the American analyst, indicates that so far they are only an additional, but far from the main, combat force. It is possible that the Russian military will simply try to bring the old T-90s up to T-90M standards in order to save time and money, according to the author of an article in an American magazine.

In addition, Episkopos refers to Rosoboronexport, which allegedly at the end of August this year announced the development of some light version of the T-90 for export markets. The American analyst believes that such a variant of the main battle tank will be able to better compete in the international arms market with the Chinese VT5 light tank. The Russian light tank will be attractive to the armies of many developing countries in Africa and Asia, which traditionally buy Russian weapons.

"... nonsense of American experts ..."
And what else can there be, apart from general phrases and conjectures, if the ekperd have no information?
Although in our media, including at VO, the T-90M was described in some detail.
By the way, I was personally pleased that what the tankers had "cried out" for a long time had come to pass: they removed the front tank-rack, the non-mechanized ammunition rack in the BO and made a quick-detachable engine block, apparently with a guitar and an oil tank. Better late than never.

Rather, it was necessary to leave the English term light, meaning not a light version, but a simplified version, without Curtains, for example, in order to reduce the price.

KUBINKA / Moscow region /, August 24. / TASS /. Rosoboronexport (part of the Rostec state corporation) expects the release of a lightweight export version of the T-90 tank. This was reported to TASS during the Army-2021 international military-technical forum.

        something like
T-90S / "object 188S" (1990s) - export modification of the T-90 with a welded turret and without the complex of optical-electronic countermeasures "Shtora-1"

The United States and Germany have several thousand tanks in storage. USA upgrades Abrams regularly, SEP3, M1A3. Leopard 2A7 go to Kuwait and Germany, new ones. In addition, Leopards for the national armies and the old versions 2A4, 2A5 are being modernized. More than 20 ..

    And again The National Interest.

A little about this magazine, for reference for those who are not in the know:
The journal is published by the Center for National Interests. Until 2011, it was called the Nixon Center. Founded in 1994. It is a think tank for the development of proposals in the field of American foreign policy. The headquarters is located in Washington DC. The Center for National Interests is a non-profit organization. Since 2000 she has been a partner of The National Interest, and since 2005 she has become its sole publisher.

The magazine's publisher and chief executive officer, Dmitry Simes, is an American political scientist specializing in Russia. He is known for bringing former US President Richard Nixon to a meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev during the Soviet era. Since September 2018, Simes, together with the deputy of the State Duma of the VI and VII convocations from United Russia, Vyacheslav Nikonov, has been hosting a social and political talk show "Big Game" on Russian Channel One. He is a native of the USSR.

Editor - Jacob Helbrunn. He has previously written for publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times.

Since 2002, Alexey Pushkov has been on the editorial board of the magazine.

The same Dmitry Simes is a regular guest on direct communication with Vladimir Solovyov in his programs.
With some simplification and biased presentation of the material, this magazine is not complimentary or hostile to Russia.

The loss of wind sensors will affect the accuracy of the shot at a long distance (it is not important at close range). It can be easily solved at the level of remrota, but Serdyukov eliminated them. I wonder where the reserve of such spare parts should be located now and who, in such cases, is engaged in repairs?

I somehow had to change the airborne to the T-62. During the day, they replaced it without any problems (the driver of the tank + 3 soldiers from the repair company + a flyer with an arrow).

When advancing to the lines of transition to the attack and in firing positions in defense, tanks will be subjected to both artillery and bomb-assault air strikes. With close explosions of shells and aerial ammunition, large fragments may well cut off the pin of the wind sensor and not only it.
