Version "M" has a modernized design of the turret with the fire control system "Kalina", it has more effective armor, the newest version of the 125-mm smoothbore cannon 2A46M.

Currently, the Ground Forces of the RF Armed Forces already have about 20 T-90M tanks. Such a small number of tanks, according to the American analyst, indicates that so far they are only an additional, but far from the main, combat force. It is possible that the Russian military will simply try to bring the old T-90s up to T-90M standards in order to save time and money, according to the author of an article in an American magazine.
