Ukraine scared Europe by completely stopping gas transit through its territory
The upcoming commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is forcing Ukraine to look for various ways to remain a transit country for gas. It got to the point that Kiev began to frighten Europe with the complete loss of gas transit through the Ukrainian territory.
At a meeting on the eve of the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and the State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy of Germany Andreas Feicht, the representative of Ukraine intimidated his German colleague with a complete stop of gas transit through the Ukrainian GTS.
According to Galushchenko, the interruption of transit will occur due to the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, with the commissioning of which Russia will redirect a significant part of gas from the Ukrainian GTS to an alternative route. All this will ultimately lead to a shortage of gas in some European countries.
According to the Ukrainian minister, due to the fact that Russia will start pumping less gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system, it will be re-profiled for the domestic market and Europe will lose a "reliable transit country" and an "independent route." And Moscow will get another lever of pressure on Europe.
Experts and analysts predict that after the commissioning of Nord Stream 2 and taking into account the operation of the Nord Stream and Turkish Stream gas pipelines, Ukraine will have no more than 10-15 billion cubic meters of gas per year. With such volumes, transit becomes unprofitable, since it will not generate income.
