The Taliban captured the first of the thirty-four administrative centers of the Afghan provinces
The Afghan government lost the first administrative center out of thirty-four. This is reported by Reuters, citing local media reports.
According to published data, the Taliban * (banned in Russia as a terrorist movement) have seized the city of Zaranj, the capital of the southwestern province of Nimruz. It is emphasized that this is the first administrative center of the province, seized by the Taliban since 2016. Earlier in Kabul, it was stated that the main goal of the Taliban is to cut communication between the provinces in order to establish full control over them.
According to media reports, the Taliban currently control most of the city, including the administration, police station and airport. It is reported that the robberies have begun.
Meanwhile, Zaranj could have become the second administrative center seized by the Taliban if government forces had not driven the militants out of the city of Shibergan, the capital of the Jowzjan province in the north of the country. Today it was reported that the Taliban managed to enter the city, occupying the outskirts, but they were subsequently driven out of there. The Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan declares large losses of militants.
Another provincial capital, which in the near future is likely to come under the control of the Taliban, may become Lashkar Gah, the administrative center of Helmand province, a large territory of which has already been captured by militants. Residents are being evacuated from the city, and the commander of the government forces, General Sami Sadat, is preparing to retreat.
Earlier it was reported that since the beginning of July the Taliban took control of the borders with five countries - Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China and Pakistan.
