The West demanded that the Russian troops be withdrawn "from the territory of Georgia" and the recognition of the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia and Abkhazia be withdrawn, Russian representatives reacted
Another anniversary of the attack by the Georgian army on the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the invasion of sleeping Tskhinval is approaching. Recall that these events took place on August 8, 2008. Then, on the personal order of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, Georgian security officials fired at the Russian peacekeepers (several people died, there were numerous wounded). Later, Saakashvili himself repeatedly admitted that the United States had promised him support in the event of a military operation. However, in the end, as is known, no military support from the United States was actually provided to Tbilisi. At the end of August 2008, Russia recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states. Then other countries began to join those that recognized the sovereignty of the republics.
Now several countries, through the United Nations Organization, have turned to Moscow with an appeal for our country to withdraw the recognition of the RSO and Abkhazia. At the same time, South Ossetia is called the "Tskhinvali region of Georgia" in circulation.
The following states require Russia to withdraw recognition of the independence of the republics: Great Britain, USA, Albania, Estonia, Ireland, Norway and France. Currently Norway, Estonia and Ireland are members (non-permanent) of the UN Security Council. At the same time, as is well known, Britain, France and the United States are permanent members of the same UN structure.
The aforementioned countries called on Russia "to withdraw its troops and security forces from Georgian territories without delay." The Caucasian republics, which became sovereign following the results of the 2008 war, continue to be considered Georgian territories in the West.
Russian representatives to the UN commented on the demand for Russia on the status of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as on the withdrawal of Russian troops. In particular, it was noted that the independence of these republics is an objective reality. In Russia, it is indicated that the Russian military contingent is in these republics in agreement with their authorities, which fully complies with international standards.
