Despite the withdrawal of the military contingent from Afghanistan, the United States will continue to strike at the militants of the Taliban movement * (banned in Russia as terrorist). This was stated by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.
Speaking at a briefing on Tuesday, Kirby said the United States is concerned about the recent situation in Afghanistan. According to him, the Pentagon has the capacity to assist government forces and has the authority to do so. Therefore, air strikes against the Taliban will continue.
We have the authority and capacity to (...) assist Afghan forces on the ground through airstrikes. We acknowledge that we are and will continue to do airstrikes to support them.
- he said.
At the same time, Kirby refused to disclose how decisions are made to attack the Taliban, explaining that the Afghan Air Force itself inflicts airstrikes and there are much more of them than the American ones.
Meanwhile, the American State Department announced the threat of a civil war in Afghanistan. According to the head of the press service of the US State Department, Ned Price, the actions of the Taliban may lead to this. Price acknowledged that negotiations between the government and the Taliban are proceeding at a slow pace as the fighting continues.
Today the Taliban control the border with five neighboring states - Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China and Pakistan. The next task is to cut communications between major cities, taking control of the main territory of the provinces.
