US State Department approves the sale of Georgia and the second batch of Javelin anti-tank systems
The second batch of American Javelin anti-tank systems will soon arrive in Georgia. According to the Pentagon press service, the US State Department approved the supply of ATGMs to the Georgian military.
The US Department of Defense's Office for Defense Cooperation and Security has sent a notice to the US Congress of a potential delivery of Javelin anti-tank systems to Georgia, which has already been approved by the State Department. The message does not indicate the number of anti-tank systems and ammunition planned for delivery, but earlier the Georgian Ministry of Defense announced its desire to purchase 46 launchers and 82 missiles for them.
As stated in the State Department, "the proposed sale of the Javelin ATGM to Georgia will not lead to a change in the military balance in the region." The complexes planned for delivery should strengthen the capabilities of the Georgian army "to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity."
The fact that the Georgian Ministry of Defense intends to purchase a second batch of Javelin anti-tank systems and missiles for them became known in June last year.
The first batch of Javelin ATGMs was received by Georgia in January 2018. According to previously published data, in total, the Georgian military received 72 launchers and 410 missiles of the complex. In addition, ten BST simulators and 70 training shots were received. In May of the same year, the Georgian Ministry of Defense organized an open display of the complexes for the general public.
