"There is nothing to protect your sky" - Polish readers comment on the dispatch of the country's Air Force contingent to Iceland
The Polish Ministry of Defense confirms information that the country's air force will be involved in assisting NATO allies in protecting their air lines. In this regard, one could assume that Polish military pilots would be busy patrolling the airspace, for example, of neighboring NATO countries - the Baltic states. But no.
It turns out that Polish military pilots are sent to the north.
According to the latest reports, F-16 fighters from the Polish Air Force will patrol the skies of Iceland. For reference: Iceland was and remains the only NATO country that does not have its own army. In fact, the only force in this northern country is the Coast Guard. For NATO, Iceland is interesting primarily for its geographical location, which can be used, for example, to monitor the situation in the Arctic region and in northern Europe.
In Polish media:
The head of the presidential chancellery noted that 140 Polish troops and 4 F-16 fighters are being sent to Iceland. This contingent receives the status of representatives of the "Air Police".
As part of this "mission", the Polish military will take over the duties of "protecting Iceland's air borders" from Thursday 5 August. According to preliminary data, the Polish military will patrol Icelandic airspace until this fall.
The office of the President of Poland said that the participation of the Polish military in foreign missions for Andrzej Duda is "a matter of security and strengthening cooperation with the allies."
Attention was drawn to the comments of the readers of the Polish press in connection with the event.
