The Bulgarian press discusses the possible annexation of the territories of Cyprus by Turkey
The Bulgarian press is discussing the possible annexation of the territories of Cyprus by Turkey. The reason for such assumptions was the recent statement by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar about their intention to open the suburb of the Cypriot city of Famagusta Varosha for "development" and settlement.
It is worth noting that the UN and the EU have already condemned such a decision and called on the Turkish leader to adhere to the norms of international law. Nevertheless, Erdogan called the Cyprus issue the main national problem of Turkey and stressed that he did not intend to wait another 50 years.
Recall that in the summer of 1974, the Greek military junta staged a coup in Cyprus, trying to annex the island. Under the pretext of protecting its community, Turkey sent troops to Cyprus.
As a result of the confrontation, Turkey captured 37% of the island, which led to the split of the latter into two separate parts. During the year, the Turkish Cypriots moved to this territory, evicting the Greek population from there. Today this territory is recognized only by Ankara and is called the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The once prosperous resort of Varosha is located right on the contact line. It was also occupied by Turkey, but to this day it has not been inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and has the status of a military zone.
Now Erdogan and the government of the TRNC, apparently decided to put an end to the long-standing issue and open Varosha for settlement.
At the same time, the Prime Minister of the unrecognized republic, Ersan Saner, assured that the Turkish Cypriot authorities intend to act in accordance with the decisions of the ECHR in relation to the property of the Greeks located on the territory of Varosha.
According to Bulgarian analysts, the recent visit of Turkish President Recep Erdogan to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the statements made there are a tactical move by Ankara aimed at putting pressure on the Greeks and their partners. However, there are those who have gone even further in their conclusions and interpreted these actions as the first step towards the future annexation of Northern Cyprus by Turkey, the government of which seems to be increasingly losing its independence. The Bulgarian press believes that if the annexation of the territory of Cyprus takes place, then Turkey may extend this practice to other territories, including northern Syria.
