Notebook of a soldier of the Russian Imperial Army

Faith and class

And it all starts with a memo or the language of a document - with a behest to a soldier, and the following portrait of the reigning emperor Nikolai Alexandrovich, so that, therefore, it is clear to whom to fulfill the oath.

Then there is a short memo on stories units, the date of the regimental holiday and the regiment's awards. So to speak, a simple way to introduce a young soldier to the course of the matter and charge him with patriotism. The book was issued after the oath, counting on literate people. The lyrics end at this point and the specifics begin.

What attracts attention?

First, the columns "estate" and "religion", which are not now, but which then were of great importance. In theory, it was Alexander the Liberator who began to dismantle the class partitions, but the document printed before the World War clearly says that all this remained and influenced, including the passage of military service.

Religion too - Jews, Muslims and Catholics with Lutherans were not required to visit the garrison church, they had a number of differences in everyday life, they were even buried in special areas of the garrison cemetery in case of death. In fact, the priests played the role of Soviet political officers and, among other things, in theory, they were also supposed to be engaged in missionary activities among the soldiers of other faiths. But with all this, religious differences were respected and taken extremely seriously.

The career ladder of a conscript soldier at the bottom of the page is also interesting. Here, in addition to replacing non-commissioned officers with sergeants, nothing has changed.

A standard medical certificate, and each regiment had its own doctor, and there was an infirmary in the garrison to accommodate patients. Further, there is a list of fines and vacations, and there is a graph on the vacation list - he was on time or late.

Satisfaction

And we are smoothly moving on to the basis of the armed forces - contentment, monetary and clothing.

An interesting note - one thing from the list per year, and not necessarily new, it could well be used. On the other hand, the same suede gloves are not to be missed at all; today, the very idea of issuing such things to ordinary servicemen of a motorized rifle unit looks wild. But in general, again, the difference with the current military personnel is not strong and big: two uniforms, ceremonial and everyday (then - marching), a list of received ...

But the equipment then and now is different, the era of rusks has passed, and otherwise everything has changed a lot. The same musicians no longer go on a campaign, revolvers are even then, one must think, for non-commissioned officers, not for privates, there are no sapper blades yet, but a wide range of instruments. The infantry has always dug a lot, whether at the head of the country Nikolai Aleksandrovich or Joseph Vissarionovich, or Vladimir Vladimirovich, and smart people try to shed not blood, but sweat. The whistles are gone, the means are different, and the shovel and the saw are still the soldier's best friends.

Salary (salary) and bed linen. It is not indicated here that a private conscript received 6 rubles a year, a junior non-commissioned officer - 24, a senior non-commissioned officer - 48 rubles a year. From 50 kopecks to 4 rubles per month. Tradition, under Gorbachev, a private conscript will receive 3,89 per month, which, taking into account inflation, is quite comparable, now - 2086 rubles, which is better, but it hasn't gone far. Under the tsar, they still relied on welding, grain money, and soap allowance, it was given in kind. But welding and grain were spent exclusively on food, and not by a soldier, but by an artel worker chosen by the company.

The soldier could keep his capital with the commander.

Or on a passbook. It was not forbidden to carry cash with you, but it was also inconvenient, barracks, summer camps, constant training ... They can steal or simply lose.

Shooting business

And finally, the book turns to shooting.

First comes instruction, somewhat archaic.

I was touched by the statement that rifle fire should pave the way for a bayonet, in something similar to propaganda, with passages about the protection of the emperor, and in something with sensible advice written in simple language for illiterate people. Moreover, the emphasis was placed on accurate shooting. And a lot of attention in the instruction is paid precisely to the moments of how to hold a rifle, how to aim, how to take into account the influence of weather and wind, how to stay cool. The Russian army knew how to shoot in 1914, to which the history of the Dorogobuzh regiment is evidence, but in the conditions of the First World War, super-sharp shooting was not so important.

Pension

This is followed by a provision on charity (pension provision) for the lower ranks.

Based on it, the annual pensions for orphans of soldiers were supposed to be in the amount of 48 to 84 rubles for widows per year, depending on the length of service. And for disabled people - from 21 to 30 rubles a year, depending on the percentage of disability. At the same time, those who found themselves in shelters, who took monastic vows, who were employed and convicted were deprived of their pensions. On the positive side - the pension could not be taken for debts, from the negatives - its size of 4 rubles per month at that time is about nothing, and the disabled 2,5 rubles were not happy. The maximum pension ceiling was set for complete disability if a permanent nurse was needed. Still, we must pay tribute - there was a system of social assistance for servicemen, and its nuances were brought to every soldier.

Well, in the end of the book, the favorite entertainment of the Russian army of all eras.

The scheme of laying out things for verification, considered, judging by the placement of the page, the most important: more important than money, what instructions, what a portrait of Nicholas II.

But in general ...

As a result, comparing that army with a modern army, you understand that now a serviceman, whether it is urgent or contract service, lives, of course, more prosperous and physically works less, but has not become much richer and more protected. And in Soviet times, there was not much difference. It is not strange, the Red Army grew out of the Imperial army, and the current Russian - from the Soviet, tradition and continuity have not gone anywhere. Although it is not easy to call a Russian soldier hungry or poorly trained, we have found funds for the army in almost all epochs of history, and the supply of soldiers was, albeit not rich, as in the United States, but quite solid. Not counting, of course, the Time of Troubles, but this is a different conversation.

        Sometimes I read about WWI and look at the photos of the "noblest" generals.
        And: a father from 30 years old remembered- "grandfather (my great-grandfather) said:" here we are in the first imperialist .. "and so on (father did not remember or said something empty?)
        Only one episode ----
        IMPORTANT --- REASON FOR THE GREAT OCTOBER SOCIALIST REVOLUTION-
        great-grandfather served as a batman under the officer. serves coffee in bed. "Ivan, I told you how many times I told you. What is needed with the foam." Razz-zzz on the teeth of his great-grandfather. "Go do as taught."
        He went out the door, spat in the cup, shook his finger and handed it again. "That's the way to do it"
        In this spit, the reason for the defeat in the WWI and the destruction of the Ros Empire and its army. Tired of enduring dentists, not re-educated officer A, turned out to be. and the whole nobility

      Most of the soldiers, unlike the sailors, were illiterate and the keeping of this book was not meant to be kept directly by the soldier. The soldier had to have such a little book with him at all times, this was especially important when entering data on monetary allowance.

      Pay attention to the handwriting, the surname is possibly entered by the owner of the book himself, but the rest is by the clerk of the unit or unit. This is a kind of soldier's registration card and does not speak of the soldier's literacy. The soldier was supposed to appear at the company office and present a book for writing. It was not allowed to make notes with your own hand, then sort out the scribbles.

              For comparison: in the infantry they were 20%, in the artillery - 19%, in the cavalry - 23%.
              Source - Table 8 Beskrovny.

              And the fleet cried that literacy breeds doubt: literate lower ranks were practically all from a working environment infected with revolutionary ideas. Farmers loyal to the tsar and the fatherland were not suitable for the fleet - they had to be trained for too long.

                Everything depended on a particular officer or admiral, opinions were different;

                "......In one of the conversations between the German attaché Hinze and Admiral G.P. Chukhnin, the attitude of this high-ranking naval officer to the rank and file was revealed. He, according to Hinze, "evaluating the thoughts and feelings of the Russian sailors, called them nothing but" savages "and to overcome such a state, in his deep conviction, it will take a lot of effort and time." I will say more - even more likely and impossible. Any average statistical "Vanya" from the N province of the village "Small buttocks" with three classes of CPH would hardly be able to master the maintenance of torpedoes or the CAS of a cruiser or battleship. Even ordinary combatant sailors had to know more than an ordinary infantryman. The fleet is still a tricky thing.

              Ordinary armeuts, and the reason was already named above, literate recruits were distributed to technical troops. Here is an excerpt from Littauer (Sumy Hussar):
              “... A soldier was drafted into the army at twenty-one, and they served in the cavalry for almost four years (in the infantry for three years). In the cavalry, the recruits were dominated by peasants who knew how to handle horses. Many of them first saw the railway when the regiment was bringing them in. Since two-thirds of them were illiterate and could not read the map, they had no idea where their home was. "
              Moreover, he writes below that "in our regiment the share of illiterates was sixty-five percent" (obviously adding the illiterate).
              By the way, a certain tradition of sorting recruits was preserved in the Soviet army, having acquired, however, a national coloring: the Slavs and Balts prevailed in the technical troops, but in all construction battalions, Central Asians were abundantly represented, who were simply illiterate.

    "4 rubles for those times is not something" the author confuses the current prices and the prices of 1912. 2,50 is certainly not serious, but 4p, depending on the province, is something. As it is now, housing costs were different.

A pack of cigarettes (10 kopecks) 2 tughras and a can of condensed milk (55 kopecks) in the military store there are also 2 tughras, but thickened, yes with cookies, it's better just sugar laughing Then, after four months, they could not look at this thickening, so you lick a spoon, before knocking over it into the "ball" and that's it. In the early 80s, the monetary allowance was increased for a private from 3 to 7 rubles, a corporal from 4 to 8 rubles. In fact, it also depended on the position. The BMP gunner-operator received 13 rubles in my opinion, and the platoon commander received more than 20 (I don't remember the exact numbers) I personally received at the end of the service (1983), being a private as a senior gunner-operator of the company, as much as 27 rubles.

          Kostya, hello. Minus players have forgotten the prices of that time. For the 60s 10, this was weighty.
          Prices, quietly and imperceptibly, began to rise in the 70s. I remember there was bread: "loaf" -48 kopecks, and then renamed: "Russian" and the price was 52 kopecks. Bicycle HVZ- "it is forbidden to carry braggers" 53 or 57. And then it appeared: It is forbidden to carry-63r. It was 1971.
          The boys had the top of the chic, wrap the handlebars of the bicycle with colored duct tape: blue and red (the last terrible rarity). The blue one cost 15 kopecks, but it was not in the store and on hand: 25 kopecks.

          Svyatoslav. I did not mean officers at all, namely soldiers, not of the nobility. From 1874, military service was introduced, and soldiers were taken from both the merchant class and the peasants and, EMNIP, from 1888, and the workers. My great-grandfather served in L.G. Semenovsky regiment at the beginning of the reign of Alexander III at the call, from the peasants. He rose to the rank of non-commissioned officer. Naturally, I know all this only from my father's stories about childhood. Now I am creatively studying the work of P.P. Dirin about L.G. Semenovsky. Will reach other L.G. regiments of course. It depends on what you want to find. The regimental history that you mentioned was written in 1883, and this is officialdom. If you are interested in reading about the real, everyday life of the regiment at the beginning of the 20th century, then Makarov is very desirable to read. There are a lot of valuable details - gathering, guarding, the life of the officers' meeting. Up to scandals and curiosities. Plus a description of the battles of the First World War, including the infamous Kovel offensives.
                For example:
                "... There was, it seems, a shooting review and knocked out, as expected, a lot of" super-excellent ". And without any crooks. We generally always shot perfectly, and the chief of weapons, the main character on such days, Lieutenant Stepan Goncharov ( killed in October 14 near Ivangorod), a fanatic of small arms business (he once shot the whole regiment in the shooting range with his own hand) would never have humiliated himself before. and a finger sticking out to the side, to the visor of his adjutant general's cap.On this day, for some reason, of all the adjectives to the "Semenovsky regiment" and to the "Semenovtsy" he most of all liked the word "correct", and so he always called us afterwards : "Correct Semenovites".
                After the shooting, they took him to the Assembly and thoroughly pumped him up. He pumped up, however, himself. At the table he spoke long and confused speeches and poured "correct" left and right. After dinner, all the officers in the corps escorted him to the first line, where he was given his little white scribe. But it wasn't over yet. The regiment duty officer said something, and all the orderlies shouted under the mushrooms: - Come out all to the front line! - People jumped out of the tents, who was in what, in panthers, in underpants, barefoot. Danilka again made a speech and again they were "correct". The mood was heightened and it was felt that everything was allowed. One of the officers shouted: - Hurray for the corps commander, swing him! - As all the boys, ranks who love any outrage, roared "Hurray!"
                "Danilka" - Lieutenant General Danilov, if that. In what regimental story will you read this? :)

            Andrei, when reading Ignatiev, you need to make an amendment, at the time of writing the book - 40-50 years and he was exaggerating. I recommend: Trubetskoy "Notes of a Cuirassier" he told about his regiment and, unlike Ignatiev, did not try to exaggerate. Unfortunately, the booklet is thin, the author did not manage to finish it (1938 and that says it all)

              Thank you, "Notes of a Cuirassier" are simply wonderful, I read them for the first time about 20 years ago ... By the way, for comparison, you can read Littauer "Memoirs of an officer of the imperial cavalry. 1911 - 1920". He served in the Sumy hussars, where at one time Trubetskoy almost went, since the Sumy men were stationed in Moscow. Very lively, only the translation is rather poor (it was already written in exile).
              As for Ignatiev, God will judge him. Including for pouring slops on colleagues and military officers.

                Ryazanets, Ignatiev read about 30 years ago, and Trubetskoy later.
                I remember that Ignatiev spoke rather loyally about the period before H2 and did not pour mud on the officers of the RYA, and his rejection of the officers who remained in the rear is a no brainer. So I don't see any slops

                  his rejection of the officers who remained in the rear is a no brainer.

                  The problem is that Ignatiev himself spent a couple of years in a combat position (he commanded the squadron in peacetime). Further headquarters and a military agent. Strictly speaking, he actually did not participate in hostilities even in the Russo-Japanese one: assistant to the senior adjutant of the Quartermaster General of the Manchurian Army. I ran around Gaolyan once, really.
                  It is not for nothing that his opus was dubbed "Fifty years in the ranks - not a day in battle."
                  As for the lies, if you please:
                  "... His cousin, A. A. Ignatiev, general of the Soviet service, in his book" 50 years in the ranks ", speaks of him very contemptuously, considering him a" loser "and not calling him otherwise than" poor Kolya ", "Fat Kolya", "poor, fat Kolya", etc. That "Kolya" was fat, everyone who knew him can testify to this. But that he was a loser is still a big question. When does Ignatiev write, that “fat Kolya must remember with bitterness to this day that ill-fated operation at Stokhod, in which he and“ Bab ”(Bezobrazov) destroyed the flower of the valiant Russian Guards infantry, throwing it into a fruitless attack on the occasion of the Bezobrazovsky name day” (p. 99), there can be no controversy here.This is an indisputable, absurd and evil lie.Like, as I think in the Soviet, in the old tsarist army, it was absolutely impossible to throw troops into the attack "on the occasion of the name day" of the commander, and I very much hope that the readers of Count Ignatiev's book, even the youngest, will not believe him in this part. "
                  They make an icon of Ignatiev, but the reality is not at all like that - he wrote loyal messages to Kolchak, and embezzlement with theft, and denunciations .. He was still a fruity.

                    Actually, there was a similar stupidity at Stokhod. Shulgin believed that the fall of the empire proceeded from there. The spare only narrated and did not experience any loyal watches.
                    PS I would also add the commander of the naval crew, Kirill Vladimirovich, to the officials.

      It is possible that suede gloves were not relied on for all lower ranks, but only for certain categories. And they got into the table for the reason that this is a single form of a book for all lower ranks.

    If we are talking about supplying the soldiers with food allowances in the Imperial Army, then we must also remember about such supplies as supplyants. And it was a serious occupation, and the Military Regulations itself determined the legitimacy and position of the mariners in the Imperial Army. The marketers who followed the troops were even accompanied and guarded by specially assigned armed guides. And since, especially during exercises, the assortment of the full-time army quartermaster was stingy and monotonous, the shopkeepers were in great demand. This was the case in the Imperial Army from the time of Peter the Great to the time of the eve of WWI. And on the eve of WWI, the supplies of the Russian army were already clearly divided into those who supplied the soldiers and junior command personnel and those who supplied the officers. Those who supplied the officers were called jackals. Moreover, only because they tirelessly scurried everywhere during the exercises in the vicinity of the location of the regiments. And they offered officers all sorts of delicacies - cheeses and sausages of all sorts, caviar, canned lobster, game pâté, chocolate, vodka, brandy, lemonade. Needless to say, neither the army of Peter, nor the army of Suvorov, nor the army of Skobelev allowed such a division of the supplies, but under Nicholas II it happened in the army. By the way, the quartermasters themselves in the Imperial Army were never distinguished by their honesty. So they poisoned the former commander of the brig "Mercury" Kazarsky when he revealed their scams, so they fed the team of the battleship "Potemkin" with spoiled products.
    But, according to the statement, the waitresses of the Russian army were not engaged in the most ancient profession. Upon admission, the reputation was checked, and at the first suspicion, they were expelled from the ranks of the marketers ...

      The quartermasters are always and everywhere crooks. In the Second World War, too. My great-uncle fought at the Marukh Pass and told stories. Even in the book: "On the Klukhor Pass" (?) There are hints about this

        So I am not saying in the commentary that the quartermasters and the storekeepers are the same. By the way, marketers, not marketers, as you write. Quartermaster is what the army must be,
        and the supply of food in the army is, let's say, self-activity in the supply of food allowances, and this self-activity may or may not be. But since this, so to speak, amateurism of the mariners under the Imperial Army in Russia was in demand and was popular among the troops, then its status and its activities were regulated by the Military Regulations itself. And this is already serious
        and order at the storekeepers was to be no less than in the commissary service, which
        also defined the Charter.

    Serving as a soldier was not easy then, and so is it now.
    But how exactly to serve him to the smallest detail is very regulated, and many minds have been working and working on this for centuries.
    And that was such a fashion after the revolution - to portray the tsarist generals as such narrow-minded, pot-bellied careerists, after another already revolution - the Soviet generals as pot-bellied and thieving dacha builders ...
    Are the current ones still brilliant and holy - until the next revolutions and coups?
    But continuity in the army, respect for past experience is one of the foundations. Here I am looking at this book (thanks to the author), and I understand everything what is there, why and why. Even now, there is no single similar document, where everything is about a soldier, from when he was late from vacation to the assigned pension. And getting something about yourself from the archive is still a hell of a task, even for an officer whose service is documented in three identical thick volumes of a personal file.

They were called then, however, Linemann, after the name of the inventor - officer of the Danish army Mads Linemann. They were first purchased for the Russian army before the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-78. True, they either did not get into the troops at all, or in very small numbers. But by the Great War they were firmly in service.

    On the other hand, the same suede gloves are not to be missed at all; today, the very idea of issuing such things to ordinary servicemen of a motorized rifle unit looks wild.

    Now there is an artificial nubuck made from oil; therefore, gloves from it can, with modern technologies, be issued even by weight. Well, modern artificial and synthetic fabrics, which are much cheaper.

      I once read the magazine "Foreign Military Review". Immediately after the army. There was a two-issue article about outfitting the US Marines for operations in the Arctic. One moment still shocks me. The standard US gloves for operations in the Arctic were officially recognized by the Marines as not very suitable for winter conditions. And it was recommended for the Marines to BUY THE SUITABLE GLOVES FOR YOURSELF, which they like and correspond to the conditions.
      BUT! There was still. laughing The army specially ordered a backpack for the firm. Because the servicemen began to buy themselves a very comfortable backpack of the Israeli army instead of the regular one, which was inconvenient for them. laughing
      Who is serving now, tell me: is this possible in the current Shoigu army? To put on something of your own, if something goes wrong? Or still serve in what you gave. And do not care the cold and so on.

        Historically, it has always been that the American army bought something for itself. This, if such recommendations were officially issued and were not bought out of absence (this has both pros and cons), it means that Americans simply have living remnants of this tradition that existed even before WWI and is not associated with those who are well known from this side of the ocean problems of scarcity and, at the same time, a disapproving initiative in buying such property for oneself.

    The book was issued after the oath, counting on literate people.

    In the Russian army, the illiterates were taught, at the level of reading and writing, but they were taught. The army was quite a social lift.
    the document, printed before the world war, clearly says - all this remained and influenced, including the passage of military service.

    It will not be difficult for the author to explain how it influenced? Here is a conscript from the peasants, here is from the bourgeoisie: how will this affect the passage of military service?
    The only thing that I met in my memories was that they were more willing to take conscripts from peasants into the cavalry due to their skills in handling horses.
    Yes, the Cossacks, of course, went to the Cossack units.
    Religion too

    Rerberg (the commander of the Pernovsky Grenadier) describes a funny moment when two recruits took an oath of allegiance to pagan idols:
    "... Both recruits take out small parcels from their pockets and carefully unfold the rags. Unfolding, both take out from the parcels two small wooden" Bozhkov ", carved and greased with lard. Both wooden" idol gods "are placed on the table ..."
    Under the tsar, they still relied on welding, grain money, and soap allowance, it was given in kind. But welding and grain were spent exclusively on food, and not by a soldier, but by an artel chosen by the company.

    1. There was also ammunition money:
    - Money for the 3rd shirt - 25 kopecks;
    - For sewing summer trousers - 4 kopecks;
    - For a small appliance and blackening boots - 55 kopecks;
    - For woolen socks and materials for cleaning ammunition - 30 kopecks;
    - For sewing ties - 1 kopeck.
    2. At the end of the camp gathering, the soldiers were given leave of absence for free work. From the money they earned, a deduction was made to the economic sums of the regiment, but it was especially stipulated that at least 1/2 of the earnings should be given to the soldiers. If the troops were used for "large state work", then the distribution of money was regulated separately each time.
    3. There were also inspection money.
    For parades, exercises, maneuvers, the Tsar could simply welcome the distinguished regiment with a monetary bonus. All this was handed out without any deductions.
    4. Finally, birthday money.
    If you were lucky, and the August Chef was in the regiment, the lower ranks were given monetary gifts for name days, christenings and weddings. The sergeant major could receive, for example, 28.5 rubles.
    The allowance for children of lower ranks was specially stipulated:
    - in service;
    - dismissed on vacation (reserve), resignation.
    From 7 to 14 years old - 7 rubles per year. Orphans are 2 times more.

    The army was neither heaven nor hell, it was just an army. It is clear that service there is not sugar, but this is in any normal army. And the notorious assault, for which some simply pray, and in the Soviet army a soldier could receive, and received, from officers in the face. But because life has changed. The country has changed. The level of comfort is unprecedented. And the army remained the same. I won't say anything about it now, but in my time such a book would not hurt a soldier. And it turned out that the commander, what he wanted, and then brought. But he asked what took it into his head. Like, "according to the charter."
    Our group of courses, after training, was sent to the troops, as if they had received pea jackets (wadded jackets) and winter footcloths. A clothing certificate was issued to the accompanying person, who does not care. Since they were raised at night, loaded, the officer was attached in front of the train. We were soldiers, who had seen nothing and knew nothing, and left. Then we found out that “You were given everything” and no one owes us anything. Wonderful. Then, it is clear that they "got it". The officers made surprised eyes, but no one did anything. None of the soldiers knew what he was supposed to be. As a great achievement in our call, they began to change boots for a period of 8 months. Before that, they were worn for two years. We, as from training, of course, did not enter this period for the first six months. :-)))
    And with everything else they did about the same.

    In the Soviet army, uniforms were issued for six months, cotton was issued for six months spring summer and p / w or h / w (half-woolen or pure-woolen) autumn winter also for six months, the ceremonial day off had, in addition to the tunic, a white belt and white gloves and gloves gray-red also two shirts in 1988 added one more shirt with short sleeves and shoulder straps on the shirt before it was not, all this was given out for two years like an overcoat. By the way, the underwear is a T-shirt, underwear underwear pants are white and their pants were given out every week during a trip to the bath, so there is no need to tell fairy tales. Boots were also issued for six months and not for a year, as the author claims here. Here are the ceremonial weekend boots, yes they were issued for 1 year. In addition, pea jackets were issued, a special working uniform in some parts was the usual cotton repainted in blue or black. In 1988, the salary of a conscript was 7 rubles 89 kopecks. In addition to this payment, there was payment for a class specialty and many other allowances, in general, a soldier of the second year of service turned out where in the region of 10 rubles (in airborne units they also paid for parachute jumps)
