US press: Iran may take advantage of planned US withdrawal from Iraq

American information sources write about plans for the complete withdrawal of the US contingent from Iraq. Recall that such an initiative was born in the administration of President Donald Trump. As the master of the White House, Trump noted that American troops "achieved their main goals in Iraq, defeating the terrorist group ISIS (banned in the Russian Federation - approx." VO "). The new US administration has not yet begun to reject the initiative of its predecessor president.

It is reported that the authorities of the United States and Iraq are planning to publish a joint document, which will outline the parameters of a possible withdrawal of American troops from military bases in Iraq. According to the latest data, the American authorities may withdraw their troops by the end of 2021, leaving a small number of military instructors in Iraq.



At the same time, the American edition of The Wall Street Journal writes that in Iraq, representatives of the Shiite confessional direction in the government are showing a particular interest in the withdrawal of US troops. American experts believe that the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq (as well as from Syria) "may eventually take advantage of Iran." In this regard, the United States itself continues to debate whether it is advisable to withdraw the entire military contingent from Iraq.

At the moment, about 2,4 thousand American troops remain on the territory of Iraq. It is noted that there are those in Washington who consider the complete withdrawal of the US contingent to be a mistake. In this regard, it is proposed to "reformat" the military presence of the American contingent in Iraq, changing its main tasks.

It is worth noting that one of the main tasks of the American military in Iraq (as well as in Syria) in recent years is the actual control of oil fields and channels for transporting produced hydrocarbons. For obvious reasons, the United States does not want to lose such control. Therefore, they cannot decide on a full-scale withdrawal of troops either.
