"Contradicts Japan's position on the northern territories": Tokyo did not agree with the Russian response to the protest note
Japan was not satisfied with the Russian response to the note of protest sent to the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding military exercises in the Kuril Islands. In Tokyo, the Russian comment was called unacceptable.
Japanese Cabinet Secretary General Katsunobu Kato said that the comment by the Russian Foreign Ministry, published in response to a protest note sent to Russia in connection with the exercises of the Russian army in the southern Kuril Islands, was considered unacceptable and contrary to the Japanese position in Tokyo.
At the same time, he stressed that Japan will continue "persistent negotiations" with Russia to resolve the "territorial problem" and conclude a peace treaty.
Earlier, Tokyo sent a note of protest to Moscow, once again expressing dissatisfaction with the holding of military exercises on the islands of the southern Kuriles, which it considers its "northern territory." The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, commenting on the Japanese protest, said that the Japanese should not make loud statements, but direct real efforts to normalize relations with Russia. In addition, she criticized Tokyo's desire to link its territorial problems with Russia's actions on its sovereign territory, which the Japanese did not like.
Large-scale exercises of the interspecific grouping of the Eastern Military District and the Pacific fleet started on June 23rd. They take place on the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin and the Sea of Japan.
