After the transition of the Republic of South Africa to a democratic system, the local army and industry were deprived of many competencies. This also applies to the possibility of repairing military equipment.
This was reported by the country's defense minister Nosiive Mapisa-Nkakula:
The lack of qualified personnel affected mainly the Air Force, the Navy [especially the divers and military officers] and to a certain extent the army.
In this regard, military specialists are being trained abroad, including in Britain, Zimbabwe, the United States, Cuba, and Russia. Pakistan and China. While they are undergoing training, Cuban mechanics have mastered the repair of combat vehicles. For a year of work, they have already been paid about $ 70 million.
In particular, as noted in the publication DefenseWeb, they have already restored 7 tanks Olifant MK 2 and 84 MK 1 (of 24 Olifant MK 2 and 133 Olifant MK 1A / 1B units in storage). Other vehicles repaired by Cuban specialists include Rooikat armored vehicles, SAMIL Trucks family trucks and tracked vehicles.
The Olifant is the South African version of the British Centurion tank. They have been in service with South Africa since the late 1950s. The main caliber is the Denel GT105 7 mm rifled gun.
