The problem of drunkenness in the Russian Empire

K. Makovsky. "Wedding feast in a boyar family of the XNUMXth century"

Article Alcoholic traditions in Russian principalities and the Moscow kingdom was told about the alcoholic beverages of pre-Mongol Rus, the emergence of "bread wine" and taverns, the alcohol policy of the first Romanovs. Now let's talk about alcohol consumption in the Russian Empire.

As we remember from this article, the first attempts to monopolize the production of alcohol were made by Ivan III. Under Alexei Mikhailovich, a serious struggle began against moonshine. And Peter I forbade distilling in monasteries too, ordering the “holy fathers” to hand over all the equipment.

The first emperor: assemblies, the Most Drunken Cathedral, medal "For drunkenness" and "Peter's water"

The first Russian emperor not only consumed alcohol in large quantities, but also made sure that his subjects did not lag behind him too much. V. Petsukh wrote at the end of the twentieth century:

"Peter I was inclined towards a democratic and very drunk lifestyle, and because of this, the divine status of the Russian autocrat faded to such an extent that Menshikov found it possible to slap the heir Alexei on the cheeks, and the people - in writing and orally, rank the emperor among the aggels of Satan."

With the scope of his drunken orgies, Peter I managed to surprise not only the people and boyars, but also the worldly foreigners.

It is known that after descending from the stocks of the built ship, Peter announced to those present:

"That bum, who on such a joyful occasion does not get drunk."

The Danish envoy, Yust Juhl, recalled that one day he decided to get rid of the need to get drunk by climbing on the mast of a new ship. But Peter noticed his "maneuver": with a bottle in his hand and a glass in his teeth, he climbed after him and gave him such a drink that the poor Dane barely managed to get back down.

Assembly of the era of Peter I

In general, drunkenness at the court of Peter I was considered almost a valor. And participation in the notorious revelry of the "All-Drunken Council" became a sign of loyalty both to the tsar and to his reforms.

The problem of drunkenness in the Russian Empire

"The Most Heartbreaking, Most Drunken and Extravagant Cathedral of Peter I". Wall sheet of the XNUMXth century

This is how the last moral obstacles preventing the spread of drunkenness in Russia were broken. But common thoughts sometimes visited the first emperor. Once he even instituted a cast-iron medal "For Drunkenness" (in 1714). The weight of this dubious award was 17 pounds, that is, 6,8 kg (not counting the weight of the chains), and it had to be worn by the "award winner" for one week. This medal can be seen at the State Historical Museum.

However, sources do not report on the mass “awarding” of such medals. Apparently, her institution was one of this emperor's fleeting quirks.

At the time of Peter I, the word "vodka" entered the Russian language. This was the name given to "bread wine" of low quality, a glass of which was included in the daily diet of sailors, soldiers, shipyard workers and builders of St. Petersburg (a glass is a hundredth part of the "official bucket", about 120 ml). This alcoholic drink was initially contemptuously called "Petrovskaya water", and then - even more pejoratively: "vodka".

Successors of Peter I

The wife of Peter I, Catherine, who entered historyLike the first empress of Russia, she also loved “bread” and other wines beyond all measure. In recent years, she has preferred Hungarian. Up to 10% of the Russian budget was spent on their purchase for the Empress's court. After the death of her husband, she spent the rest of her life in continuous drinking.

The French envoy, Jacques de Campredon, reported to Paris:

"(Catherine's) entertainment consists in almost daily drinking in the garden, lasting all night and a good part of the day."

Catherine, apparently, became decrepit extremely quickly precisely from excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. She died at the age of 43.

At a fairly early age, through the efforts of the Dolgoruky, the young emperor Peter II also became addicted to wine.

Age of Empresses

But Anna Ioannovna, on the contrary, did not drink herself, and did not tolerate drunken people in her court. The courtiers were then allowed to openly consume alcoholic beverages only once a year - on the day of her coronation.

I must say that both Anna Ioannovna and her favorite Biron were slandered by the monarchs of the Petrine line of the Romanov dynasty who came to power. There were no atrocities outside the scope of Anna's ten-year reign, and the budget under this empress, for once, became surplus. Minich and Lassi went to the Crimea and to Azov, washing away the shame of the Prut campaign of Peter I with enemy blood. The Great Northern Expedition set off. Yes, and her subjects lived easier under her than under Peter I, who "in order to protect the Fatherland, he ruined it worse than the enemy."

Under his daughter Elizabeth, who was required to put on a new dress every day, so that after her death “32 rooms were discovered, all filled with the dresses of the late empress” (Shtelin). And under Catherine II, during whose reign serfdom turned into real slavery. But we got ahead of ourselves.

Elizabeth also "respected" all kinds of wines: as a rule, she herself did not go to bed sober and did not interfere with others getting drunk. So, her personal confessor, according to the register drawn up in July 1756, was allocated for a day 1 bottle of a musket, 1 bottle of red wine and half a carafe of Gdansk vodka (obtained by triple distillation of grape wine with the addition of spices, a very expensive alcoholic drink). On the table at which the chamber-junkers dined, 2 bottles of Burgundy wine, Rhine wine, musket, white and red wine, and 2 bottles of English beer (12 bottles in total) were placed daily. Singers received 3 bottles of red and white wine daily. State lady M. E. Shuvalova was entitled to one bottle of unspecified grape wine per day.

In general, staying sober in Elizabeth's court was quite difficult. It is said that in the morning the guests and courtiers of this empress were found lying side by side in the most embarrassing physiological states caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. At the same time, completely outsiders often turned out to be next to them, no one knows how they had penetrated into the royal palace. And therefore, the stories of contemporaries that no one ever saw Peter III (Elizabeth's successor) drunk before noon should be considered as evidence of the unnatural behavior of this emperor in the court environment.

During the reign of Elizabeth, the word "vodka" first appeared in a state legal act - the empress's decree of June 8, 1751. But somehow it didn't take root.

Over the next 150 years, the terms "bread wine", "boiled wine", "burning live wine", "hot wine" (the expression "strong drinks" also appeared), "bitter wine" (hence "drink bitter "And" bitter drunkard ").

There were also the terms semi-hard (38% by volume, first mentioned in 1516), foamy wine (44,25%), triple (47,4%), double alcohol (74,7%). Since the middle of the XNUMXth century, foamy wine has been increasingly called "pervak" or "pervach". It did not foam: in those days the upper and best part of any liquid was called "foam" ("milk foam", for example, is now called cream).

And the word "vodka" at that time among the people existed as a slang. In the literary language, it began to be used only at the beginning of the XNUMXth century. Even in Dahl's dictionary "vodka" is still just a synonym for "bread wine", or - a diminutive form of the word "water". In aristocratic circles, vodkas were then called distillates of grape and fruit wines, to which various pomace and spices were added.

Russian popular print of the XNUMXth century

Under Elizabeth, for the first time in history, Russian bread wine began to be exported.

Brigadier A. Melgunov in 1758 received the right to export "hot wine" of high quality abroad for sale: "such kindness that cannot be found in supplies to taverns."

Kruzhechnye yards (former taverns) under Elizabeth were renamed "drinking establishments". The remains of one of them were discovered in 2016 while laying cable collectors in the area of Moscow's Teatralnaya Square. This drinking establishment survived the Moscow fire of 1812 and operated until at least 1819.

However, the word "tavern" from the Russian language has not gone anywhere, having survived to our time. And in tsarist Russia and kruzhechnye yards, and drinking establishments among the people continued to be called "taverns".

"Daughter of Petrov" also marked the beginning of a new fashion fad.

In "decent houses" now, without fail, there were tinctures and liqueurs for all letters of the alphabet: anise, barberry, cherry, ... pistachio, ... apple. Moreover, in contrast to imported "vodkas" (distillates of grape and fruit wines), in Russia they also began to experiment with refined "hot bread wine". This led to a real revolution in the home distillery of the nobility. Nobody paid attention to the incredibly high cost of the resulting product. But the quality was also very high. Catherine II then sent the best samples of such products to her European correspondents - Voltaire, Goethe, Linnaeus, Kant, Frederick II, Gustav III of Sweden.

Catherine II "became famous" also by the statement

"Drunken people are easier to manage."

During her reign, on February 16, 1786, a decree was issued "On the Permission of the Permanent Distillation of the Nobles", which actually abolished the state monopoly on the production of alcoholic beverages and state control over their production.

Some researchers believe that one of the reasons (not the main one, of course) of the assassination of Emperor Paul I was his desire to cancel this Catherine's decree and return the production of alcoholic beverages and vodka under state control.

Alcohol policy of the Russian Empire in the XNUMXth century

The monopoly on the production of alcohol was nevertheless partially restored by Alexander I - in 1819.

The reason was the disastrous state of the state, devastated by the war of 1812 and the subsequent "liberation campaign" of the Russian army. But the retail trade in alcohol remained in private hands.

Under Alexander I, by the way, vodka began to spread in France.

It all started with deliveries to the Parisian restaurant "Veri", rented by the Russian command for generals and senior officers. And then other restaurants and bistros began to order vodka. Together with Russian soldiers and officers, the Parisians began to try it.

In 1826, Emperor Nicholas I partially restored the ransom system, and in 1828 completely abolished the state monopoly on vodka.

Many believe that the emperor took these steps, wishing to make a conciliatory gesture against the nobility, who were extremely unpleasantly impressed by the repressions against the Decembrists, famous and influential families.

Under Nicholas I, the government, apparently wishing to accustom the people to vodka, suddenly limited the production and sale of wines, beer and even tea. Brewing became so taxed that by 1848 almost all breweries were closed. It was at that time that Bismarck issued one of his catchphrases, stating that

"The Russian people would have a brilliant future if they were not completely infected with drunkenness."

Alexey Korzukhin. The drunken father of the family. 1861

The reign of Nicholas I became a "golden age" for wine "tax farmers", whose number in the last years of his life reached 216. Contemporaries compared their profit to the tribute of the people to the Mongols. So, it is known that in 1856 alcoholic beverages were sold for more than 151 million rubles. The treasury received 82 million of them: the rest went into the pockets of private traders.

Wine tax collector V.A.Kokorev, lithograph by V. Timm, 1856

The tax farmers then had tremendous influence and incredible opportunities. The case against one of them in the Moscow department of the Senate was led by 15 secretaries. Upon completion of the work, documents for several dozen carts were sent to St. Petersburg. This huge wagon train, along with the people accompanying it, simply disappeared on the road - no traces of it were found.

In the middle of the 1852th century, the number of drinking establishments in the Russian Empire increased sharply. If in 77 there were 838 1859, in 87 - 388 1863, then after XNUMX, according to some sources, it reached half a million.

At the pub. Russian illustrated almanac, 1858

The devastation of the population and the increase in mortality from drunkenness then caused such discontent that riots in the villages often began with the defeat of drinking establishments.

On the outskirts of the Russian state, where the traditions of self-government were still strong, people sometimes solved the problem of drunkenness of neighbors and relatives themselves - using unusual but very effective methods of "folk addiction". So, in some Don Cossack villages, drunkards were publicly flogged on a Sunday afternoon in the market square. The "patient" who received this treatment had to bow on four sides and thank the people for the science. It is said that relapses after such "treatment" were extremely rare.

Under Alexander II, in 1858-1861, the unthinkable happened: in 23 provinces of the center, south, middle and southern Volga and Ural regions, a mass "sober movement" began to spread.

The peasants smashed drinking establishments and took vows to refuse alcohol. This greatly frightened the government, which lost a significant part of the "drunk money". The authorities used both "stick" and "carrot". On the one hand, up to 11 thousand protesting peasants were arrested, on the other, in order to stimulate trips to drinking establishments, the prices for alcohol were reduced.

In 1861, a scandal in society was caused by V. Perov's painting "Rural religious procession at Easter". Actually, the artist did not depict the traditional procession around the church, but the so-called "glorification": after Easter (on Bright Week), village priests went from door to door and sang church hymns, receiving gifts and treats from parishioners in the form of "bread wine". In general, it looked, on the one hand, like pagan carols, and on the other hand, like the pre-New Year visits of "Santa Clauses" in Soviet times and today. At the end of the "glorification", its participants literally could not stand on their feet. In the picture we see a completely drunk priest and a priest who has fallen to the ground. And the drunken old man does not notice that the icon is turned upside down in his hands.

At the request of the authorities, Tretyakov, who bought this painting, was forced to remove it from the exhibition. And they even tried to bring Perov to trial for blasphemy, but he managed to prove that in the Moscow region of Mytishchi such “religious processions” are organized regularly and do not surprise anyone.

In 1863, the ransom system, which caused widespread discontent, was finally abolished. Instead, a system of excise taxes was introduced. This led to a decrease in the price of alcohol, but its quality also decreased. Spirits made from quality grain were sent abroad. In the domestic market, they were increasingly replaced by vodka made from potato alcohol. The result was an increase in drunkenness and an increase in the number of alcohol poisoning.

At the same time, by the way, the famous Shustovskaya vodka appeared. To promote it, NL Shustov hired students who went to drinking establishments and asked for "vodka from Shustov." Having received a refusal, they left with indignation, and sometimes they made loud scandals, about which they wrote in the newspapers. It was also allowed to cheat, on the condition that the amount of damage to the institution does not exceed 10 rubles.

In the same 1863, a vodka distillery “P. A. Smirnov ".

Lubok "Wine is the worst enemy of mankind"

In 1881, it was decided to replace the old drinking establishments with taverns and taverns, in which it was now possible to order not only vodka, but also a snack to it. At the same time, for the first time, they thought about the possibility of selling takeaway vodka and portions less than a bucket.

Yes, there was simply no smaller container for vodka then. Only imported wine was sold in bottles (which already came from abroad in bottles).

The strength of vodka then did not have clearly defined boundaries, the strength of 38 to 45 degrees was considered permissible. And only on December 6, 1886 in the "Charter on Drinking Fees" a standard was approved, according to which vodka had to have a strength of 40 degrees. This was done for the convenience of calculations. And DI Mendeleev with his theoretical work of 1865 "On the combination of alcohol with water" has nothing to do with it. By the way, Mendeleev himself considered the optimal dilution of alcohol to 38 degrees.

Meanwhile, protests against the local taverns continued. Moreover, they received the support of world famous writers and scientists, among whom were, for example, F. Dostoevsky, N. Nekrasov, L. Tolstoy, D. Mamin-Sibiryak, I. Sechenov, I. Sikorsky, A. Engelgart.

As a result, on May 14, 1885, the government allowed rural communities to close down drinking establishments through "village sentences."

Under Alexander II, planting of vineyards began on the territory of the Northern Black Sea region. In 1880, Russian champagne was received in Abrau-Dyurso, which from the beginning of the century replaced French at the imperial receptions.

And in the late XIX - early XX centuries. there was also a rehabilitation of beer, the production of which began to grow. True, two-thirds of the empire's breweries produced one sort - "Bavarskoe".

On July 20, 1893, the state monopoly on distilling was restored. And in 1894, finally, the first state-owned shops were opened, in which they sold vodka in bottles. This was done at the suggestion of the Minister of Finance of the Russian Empire S. Yu. Witte.

However, the people did not immediately get used to this innovation, and at first the so-called "glass-makers" were constantly spinning near these shops, offering the suffering ones their dishes "for rent." At the same time, restrictions were introduced on the sale of alcoholic beverages: in large cities, vodka began to be sold from 7:00 to 22:00, in rural areas - in winter and autumn until 18:00, in summer and spring - until 20:00. The sale of alcohol was prohibited on the days of any public events (elections, community meetings, etc.).

In 1894, the famous "Moscow special vodka" was patented, which was also produced in the USSR. It was no longer a kind of bread wine, but a mixture of rectified alcohol and water.

Finally, in 1895, by order of Witte, vodka was sold instead of bread wine. There were two varieties of vodka on sale in state-owned shops: the cheaper one with a red wax lid (that was the most accessible to the people) and more expensive - with a white lid, which was called “dining room”.

In addition to state-owned wine shops in large cities at that time there were also “porter shops”, where they sold beer, and “Renskoye cellars” (distorted “Rhine”), which sold imported wine. In addition, at the beginning of the 1905th century, bars were opened at some of the capital's restaurants where cocktails could be ordered (the first was in XNUMX at the Medved restaurant). Then cocktail bars appeared in Moscow.

Meanwhile, the situation with popular drunkenness continued to deteriorate. According to statistics, the consumption of wine drinks per capita in 1890 was 2,46 liters, in 1910 - 4,7 liters, in 1913 - just over 6 liters.

At the beginning of the 1917th century in some Russian cities (for example, in Saratov, Kiev, Yaroslavl, Tula), on the initiative of local authorities, sobering-up stations appeared. By XNUMX, such establishments were opened in all provincial cities.

On March 30, 1908, 50 peasant deputies of the State Duma issued a statement:

"Let the vodka be removed to the cities, if they need it, but in the villages it finally destroys our youth."

D. Bulgakovsky. "Return of the drunkard home", 1900

And in 1909, the First All-Russian Congress on the Fight against Drunkenness was held in St. Petersburg.

Even Grigory Rasputin criticized the government's alcohol policy at the time.

"No alcohol law"

During the First World War, the Russian government took unprecedented measures, for the first time in history, completely banning the use of spirits. On the one hand, there were some positive aspects. In the second half of 1914, the number of drunken people arrested in St. Petersburg turned out to be 70% less. The number of alcoholic psychoses has decreased. Contributions to savings banks have increased significantly. And the consumption of alcohol that has become inaccessible has dropped to 0,2 liters per capita. But the ban, as expected, led to a sharp increase in home brewing, which the authorities were unable to cope with.

Moonshine still of the early twentieth century

Initially, alcohol was only allowed to be served in expensive first-class restaurants. In other establishments, colored vodka and cognac were served under the guise of tea.

All kinds of denatured alcohol began to be used everywhere. So, for example, according to the results of 1915, it turned out that in Russia the purchases of cologne by the population had doubled. And the Voronezh perfumery plant "Partnership of L. I. Mufke and Co." this year produced cologne 10 times more than in 1914. Moreover, this enterprise launched the production of the so-called "Economic cologne" of extremely low quality, but cheap, which was bought specifically for consumption "inside".

The number of drug addicts increased sharply, and in all strata of the population of the empire. There were also invented "cocktails" in which alcohol was mixed with drugs. "Baltic tea" was called a mixture of alcohol and cocaine, "raspberry" - alcohol with opium.

An advertisement for heroin, which until the early 30s of the twentieth century was produced by the famous firm "Bayer" as a cough medicine

A. Vertinsky recalled:

“At first, cocaine was sold openly in pharmacies in sealed brown cans ... Many were addicted to it. The actors carried bubbles in their vest pockets and "charged" each time they went on stage. The actresses carried cocaine in powder boxes ... I remember once I looked out of the window of the attic where we lived (the window looked out onto the roof) and saw that the entire slope under my window was strewn with brown empty cans of Moscow cocaine. "

The Bolsheviks later, with great difficulty, managed to stop this "epidemic" of drug addiction, which swept through the entire Russian society.

The losses of the Russian budget turned out to be huge, which in 1913 was formed by 26% at the expense of revenues from the state sale of alcohol.

In the next articles, we will continue our story and talk about the use of alcohol in the USSR and post-Soviet Russia.

the article is good, alcoholic riots are not even mentioned, which took almost a nationwide scale of the Russian people against the authorities' policy of soldering the population. Ryzhov, have you forgotten about the riots?
The author does not mention the reason for drunkenness in the Republic of Ingushetia under Nikolashka: the purchase of grain by the state was so negligible purchase prices that the peasantry preferred to DRIVE the SAMOGON and sell it, which led to the general drunkenness of the population.
For comparison, I would show how they got drunk in Germany or England, how historians do not like to talk about it, because it is always "safe" there, but we know now what the Oktberfests lead to or how the owners of Greek or Turkish hotels relate to English tourists who get drunk in the trash, and then row the streets or how Finns came to Leningrad and drank until they blue in the face. And then they were loaded onto buses and sent home. Such behavior and treatment of alcohol should have "glorious" centuries-old traditions, but historical science in the person of Ryzhov is not interested.

The position of the semi-literate Russian Old Believers is interesting. Vodka and tobacco were completely denied ... Maybe this is the real Russian people. Even the fact that everyone had their own cup, spoon, bowl. A stranger was not given. Health care, hygiene, a barrier to epidemics. An article about Old Believers would be interesting. Life, traditions, everyday life.

Well, this is not true: not "sober movement" and not "spread", but the people defended their way of life, to live WITHOUT drunkenness AT ALL.
From your words, it turns out that everyone around was drinking and suddenly the phenomenon of sobriety happened and began to spread, but it was, on the contrary, among the general sobriety the phenomenon of drunkenness began to spread, as a state policy, and the people rose up against it.
80% of the population at the turn of the century were peasants and they lived in a collective society, where everyone in their world / community knows everything about each other and the influence of the world on one person was decisive: they will say “do not drink” and the person will not drink, because he is against society nobody will go.

Yes, it was for everyone. The Union, if anything, also profited from the drunkenness of the people. There was a period in the beginning when you could drink right at work. Vodka gives too much money to the treasury to ignore this type of income.

Consider that you actually gave him half what it looks like to him. And the cost of the toy for you is not the one for which you "sold" it to him. Nice savings, isn't it? In the USSR, there were both taxes on citizens and taxes on businesses. And so the drunk is a proven option for relieving social tension, and a great way to squeeze money back into the treasury. Joseph Vissarionovich, if desired, could probably try to eradicate drunkenness for good, but he did not even try. On the contrary, under him the sobriety society was abolished.

Sobriety societies have been eliminated, I agree. But the sale of any product within a country with a planned economy does not make the country richer. Reduce the salary the same effect. Increase the price of food the effect is the same. Introduce new taxes, the effects are the same. The wrappers will go to the treasury. It is not necessary to solder the people to milk it. By the way, in the article on your link I did not find a word about the enrichment of the country. Except for the strange quote from Stalin.

Increase the price of food the effect is the same. Introduce new taxes, the effects are the same. The wrappers will go to the treasury. It is not necessary to solder the people to milk it.

If you cut your salary, you will get dissatisfaction. Raise prices and add taxes, and the situation is even more heated. It is much easier and safer for the authorities to exchange money for cheap alcohol. And the growth of domestic crime is evil, but not so unacceptable for politicians. In the end, if the Bolsheviks, having come to power, having begun a real struggle against drunkenness, after a few years turned sharply and followed the path already beaten by the tsarist government, then they had very good reasons for this.

But these reasons do not apply to the enrichment of the country. In those days, there was permanent inflation. Change the salary / consumer basket balance and there will be the same meaningless effect as from the sale of cheap vodka.

In a conversation with foreign workers on November 5, 1927, I.V. Stalin answered a number of questions:

Question: How is the vodka monopoly linked with the fight against alcoholism?
Answer: I think that it is difficult to link them at all. There is an undeniable contradiction here. The party is aware of this contradiction, and it went for it deliberately, knowing that at the given moment the admission of such a contradiction is the least evil. When we introduced the vodka monopoly, we were faced with an alternative: either to go into bondage to the capitalists, handing over to them a number of important factories and factories, and receive for this certain funds necessary to turn around; or introduce a vodka monopoly in order to obtain the necessary circulating funds for the development of our industry on our own and thus avoid foreign bondage. This is how the question stood before us when we introduced the vodka monopoly. Of course, generally speaking, it would be better without vodka, for vodka is evil. But then you would have to go temporarily into bondage to the capitalists, which is an even greater evil. Therefore, we preferred the lesser evil. Now vodka generates more than 500 million rubles in income. To give up vodka now means to give up income, moreover, there is no reason to assert that alcoholism will be less, since the peasant will begin to produce his own vodka, poisoning himself with moonshine.

Once upon a time in the SA in the headquarters of the regiments there were buffets - for whom to have breakfast, who to have lunch, and for someone to "roll" 50 grams if the stress needed to be relieved. In the evenings, leaving the service, my father always went into the buffet - 50 grams of skate for himself, candy for me. Was it drunkenness ?!

In your case, unlikely. But the proletariat was much more dissolute than the officer corps. At lunchtime, a bottle of 0,5 vodka was bought for three or four, and during the remaining working day I drank on the sly. Not all of them, but there were enough individuals who smelled of alcohol at the end of the working day.

I read the second article and the cheerful mood that accompanied the reading of the first vanished somewhere. It's a nightmare. Moreover, historically confirmed by Valery. I don’t know how where, but in our neighboring villages, the bums died out a few years ago, there are only a few bitter drunks left, but they also have to work in order to have money for drinking, for work, of course, they are the hardest and dirtiest. The rest of the people drink, of course, but there is no general drunkenness. Those working in the city have cars and therefore no longer drink on Sunday, because the eagles from the traffic police are on guard and you can run into a very good amount, but who needs it. Somehow I don’t remember any fights and brawls, thank God it’s not the nineties.

      there is no general drunkenness
Yes, it was the people who practically stopped "drinking" - I judge by their friends, neighbors. Now, if they are kicked out of work for this business (and now it’s like two fingers on the asphalt — they’re trying to persuade them to tie up and they won’t hold sentimental conversations), then "where will the peasant go ": there is so little work, the factories were closed, and how to live and pay off all kinds of mortgages? I could climb from one factory over the fence to another if anything, but now everyone is holding on to the place, because there is nowhere, God forbid, something happened.

At the same time, with their workers, they can still arrange a retake with a narcologist. Suddenly the "frame" is buggy. Pointer - selection of a pass and a kick. A doctor's note will not help - they say - I bought it.

The popularity of gin was brought about by the prohibition of the Guild of Distillers monopoly in 1690 by William of Orange, who ascended the throne in 1688. The king tried to get rid of the import of French brandy and thereby improve the kingdom's trade balance. Already in 1736, gin manufacturers and sellers were obliged to obtain licenses and pay taxes. Only 2 manufacturers in England received licenses - the rest went underground. The number of poisoning with a low-quality product has sharply increased and violent crimes have become more frequent - reprisals against informers - for denunciation of a "moonshiner" they paid a rather sick amount of 5 pounds. As a result, the law was canceled in 1743.
It is noteworthy that Bishop Thomas Wilson advocated restricting alcohol sales because "drunken people do not recognize power."
The more liberal Gin Act of 1751 put an end to overproduction and massive drinking. An important role was played by the rise in grain prices, thanks to which flour began to bring in profits comparable to alcohol, and many alcohol producers abandoned this business.
a person after 12 hours of work (seven days a week) could not sleep
To this end, workers began to take laudanum-opium tincture, which was then freely sold at that time.

Opium was easier to obtain for British workers. The colonies of the empire produced it in the required quantities. But the domestic worker was left with only alcohol.

A worker should eat less, sleep less and work more ... It is desirable not to demand money for work either.

It is argued that this money is used to pay for the work of the Air Force, which does not provide advertising, and therefore cannot earn money. They also pay for a TV license in Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Ireland, Germany, France, Denmark, Austria. Belgium and Iceland have recently been canceled. And yet I keep asking the question: what was it? This soldering - what? The conscious transformation of the people from an animate subject of history into an inanimate object, into an object that can be moved away, so as not to interfere, so that it does not dangle underfoot in the process of pulling at least the ruling class to the European level of the civilization that existed at that time. And the ruling class - to get drunk, so that it does not really resist when they, the ruling class, will be dragged along. This means that Peter I did not have enough intelligence, will and diplomacy to make this involvement in civilization by reasonable methods. And it became as over the knee, as with the natives.
Subsequent kings, looking at the results of the previous reign, deduced, and what, they say, is still convenient! As long as the people lie drunk, the ruling class can, on formal grounds, pretend to be Europeans. Which they did, including abandoning the Russian language in favor of foreign ones. Historical meanness took place. There were two Russias. One Russian is a subordinate people, forcibly driven into lawlessness by general drunkenness and therefore deprived of sufficient strength to resist, and even more so the right, on equal terms with the authorities, to pull themselves up to the level of Europe. The second Russia is alien, foreign - this is the power. The gap between the government and the people grew over time and took on catastrophic forms, such as, probably, was not observed anywhere else in Europe. And this time, calculated in centuries, turned out to be sufficient to permanently consolidate in the mentality of the Russian people mistrust of their power.

                    Good morning everybody!!! )))
Well, why a complex base? It's just that simple. Look here.
The attitude of the tsarist government to the forced people was almost the same as that of the Europeans who climbed into the North American continent to the Indians there. Almost, because the Indians were not seen as a productive force, and the Russian people were seen as such. Moreover, a productive force, from which it was necessary to pull all the veins on the luxury of the ruling class, on its life in London and Paris. And no people nishtyakov for that! None! And so that the people do not resist, make drunkenness a prerequisite for its existence in the form of an obedient herd.
As a result, the nation-producer of material values was caught in the grip of cruel exploitation on the one hand and obedience imputed through drunkenness on the other. The ungrateful power was not shared with the people! Nothing!
The ruling elite believed that, they say, it would come down and so, somehow we would catch up to Europe. But it didn't work! For her herself, it did not work out to the end. And to succeed, it was necessary to raise your own powerful Russian capitalist. Such, in spite of everything, arose. But by no means in sufficient quantities - was it possible to obtain a powerful capitalist stratum from a people clamped in a vice? And does the ruling class need its own capitalist, who, by definition, is rebelling against the monarchy? And then there was an imitation of the saturation of Russia with the necessary number of capitalists at the expense of foreigners, who were convenient because they did not even think of rebelling against the government of a foreign country for them, for which they were allowed to export much more capital than to leave here in the form of taxes. But what is the picture for external consumption, eh? Like, we, Europe, are like you, or even better.

Well, all this imitation has been swept away.

The people murmur, looking at Europe, for they go there, they see that the power is being divided. But the habit of non-resistance leads to only one thing: ah don't you share? Well, let's steal. Because everyone steals! Not to steal means to look like a sucker in the eyes of the thieves' authorities. And yet, in our strange, infernal reality, every now and then honest people are born with a craving for an honest life. But due to the lack of such, real life forces them to steal. This makes them ashamed and painful, tormented by their conscience. There are no such people in power, naturally honest, pure people do not get there a priori. This property of an exploiting society must be understood.

They brought a harlot to him, and according to custom they threw stones at them ..
                        - What to do with her? If he says to throw stones, then he is for violence, and if he does not allow. So you are against folk customs?

You, Lyudmila Yakovlevna, are sorely lacking in cynicism. You are a romantic and you are looking for some sublime explanation for the crudest and most primitive processes.
And here, in fact, everything is simple and cynical - money.
And, what is interesting, the total drunkenness of the people is not profitable for the state. - there is no one to work. Why do people need the state? To work. When they work, they bring the employer (government) income comparable in volume to what they themselves receive. Roughly speaking, people already give more than half of their earnings to the state or to the employer. But he still has the other half, and this is a mess. So you also have to seize it in all sorts of ways - and the sale of vodka here is just one of the ways to do it.
And note - drugs are banned almost everywhere. Do you know why? They kill too quickly. They are destroying the food base too quickly. Still, the state cares about us, this cannot be denied. And, I think, in his dreams, any ruler sees his people well-fed, sober, cheerful and hard-working. But when the question of concrete, "live" money arises - here they are, just stretch out your hand! - how can you refuse this? And besides, there are also a bunch of such enterprising businessmen and effective managers hovering around - like, trust me, I will organize everything and bring you such a lot of money! And this does not really matter in what state the people are. The more you drink the better.
And by the way, have you ever tried driving drunk? This is not easy. smile
In fact, the easiest way to manage is well-fed and satisfied.

Misha, calling me romantic, which does not correspond to reality at all, you thereby, so that I would not be offended, gracefully transferred the point of view from the place from which the people are looking at the problem, that is, from the ground, to the palace window, from which peeps and oversees the problem of political power.
Well, come on, and I will look out of the domineering window.
Yes, it was difficult for the kings!
The necessary increase in the royal treasury cannot be provided by a drunk worker, but it is also impossible to abandon the increase in the treasury by selling alcohol to the same employee.
                    Execution cannot be pardoned.
This problem, it seems to her, is being successfully solved by the modern government. To replenish the treasury through the sale of alcohol, leave the necessary number of Russians who are allowed by religion to use, and where possible, replace the decline of Russians with non-drinking workers from Central Asia. And if Asians settle down and begin to use in a harsh climate, they will be replaced by blacks. Negroes will not come, they will be replaced by Arabs. And there, you see, it will finally reach the robots. Until the high Western technologies of the day before yesterday. But a certain, strictly limited number of Russians will be preserved regardless of their production needs - this is, so to speak, a strategic supply of power that consumes alcohol.

You view the implementation of alcohol as a political instrument, and even more narrowly - as an instrument of national policy, which, in my deep conviction, it is not. This is just a way to replenish the state budget, nothing more.
Nobody purposefully persecutes Russians - there are no discounts on alcohol for you and me in stores. And Muslims, having lived here for some time, begin to ferment no worse than ours, especially if they find themselves outside the constant control of their fellow countrymen. In general, they, of course, drink less, especially there, at home, where their parents and grandfathers are watching them, but no one forces us to drink either, we ourselves are happy about pouring a glass, and some are even looking for such an excuse. Yesterday I drank as many as three in the evening, slept well at night and got up in the morning with excellent health.
It is possible to prohibit the production of alcohol or impose draconian taxes on it (in fact, this is what is happening now), but this will not solve the very issue of human drunkenness - people will poison themselves with anything, they will start to drive any poison according to the principle "just to poke it out" and it will only get worse - both in terms of the health of the nation and in terms of replenishing the state budget.
Drunkenness does not start in a store full of alcohol for every taste, it is in our heads, in our culture, way of life, traditions, in what has been formed over the centuries. And at the same time, Russians are by no means the most drinking people on the planet, many drink more. Is their government poisoning them, too, to replace them with someone? I doubt it.
Humanity drinks in principle. Even the Australian aborigines have some kind of alcohol.
One of my colleagues laid out a graph of how the amount of alcohol consumed changed. Next to this graph, it would be nice to lay out a graph of population growth, a graph of the growth of its well-being and a graph of alcohol production. It would be interesting to compare them, but I am personally lazy to look for.
A person who drinks for any state is just a load, without a useful exhaust. In addition, he is socially dangerous - he is more prone to committing crimes, and in a group he generally follows a leader who does not know what comes to his head. Well, if we are talking about a large group, then it can generally turn completely suddenly and anywhere, since their leaders will change with the frequency of frictions in rabbits, this is complete unpredictability. For a long time in one direction, of course such a group will not be able to act, but it will still have time to heap troubles. Who needs it?
Imagine that such gasoline appeared, which, if you fill it into a car, allows it to start up (or stall) at will and independently choose the speed of movement. Personally, I would not buy such gasoline even for an unloved neighbor. smile

In my two comments, I looked at the problem from two different points of view. None of them suited you. It follows from your two comments that a drinking person is not beneficial to any government, but getting money into the treasury from taxes and excise taxes on alcohol is beneficial for any government. It turns out that I spoke from the point of view of the population too, and you - exclusively from the point of view of the government. Of course, I laughed a little, talking about the number of us, Russian people, needed by the government to receive a certain amount of money in the treasury from the sale of alcohol. You took it seriously and began to refute it. Maybe because, on formal grounds, my joke is very similar to the truth? In addition, you inattentively read part of my commentary regarding Asians and others.

It just seems to me that it makes no sense to look at this problem from different points of view.
As an ordinary person, entering the store, I do not see any excitement at the shelves with alcohol. Standing at the checkout and looking at other people's purchases, I don't see everyone having alcohol. Maybe twenty percent, but no, probably not twenty percent. Mostly beer after work. Vodka and cognac are less common and mostly on weekends. Moreover, Asians-Caucasians buy alcohol no less than Europeans - mainly beer and vodka, I have not met them with cognac or wine. Perhaps because beer and vodka are not a product of grape processing, I don’t know. It seems like their prophet forbade them to use fermented grapes.
In the trash I rarely see drunks on the street, lying around - I don't remember when was the last time. Those who sit and drink on benches, in gazebos, at entrances, especially now, when it’s warm, there’s enough. Every day I see in the evening. Different ages - from young people to retirees. But, I repeat, in the trash of drunks, as it was ten or fifteen years ago, when there were heaps of such goodness, I do not see.
This is from the point of view of the "people", me, that is. smile
But why, from the point of view of the government, it is more profitable to have healthy and efficient citizens, I have already explained. A healthy person stupidly brings more money to the state than an alcoholic. And to the question “why then sell vodka at all?” There is only one answer - because if the state does not do it for its own benefit, then the underground market will do it - for its own benefit, without any control of both the quantity and quality of the product. For the people need it, the people want to drink beer and vodka and everything else. Some more often, some less, some more, some less, but want to.
And there is no politics here, Lyudmila Yakovlevna. No. While it is impossible to prohibit the people "wanting to drink", to prohibit simply "to drink" will not work. And "if the booze cannot be prevented, it must be headed", everyone knows that. smile

The author does not claim that the riots in the villages started over drinking establishments, and there is nothing to reproach him with. However, it would be worth noting that the peasant revolts began not because of alcohol policy, but because of the economic situation of the peasants in general and the landlord's lawlessness over the serfs in particular. And the drinking establishments were just a red rag - the place where the hated tsarist tax farmer sat, tearing three skins of money from the peasants. At the same time, having smashed the drinking house, one could also profit from both money and alcohol.
Little has been said about the peasant sober movement, and everything seems to be correct, but even there, too, everything was not so unambiguous. Agitators for sobriety - peaceful agitators, and those who simply did not drink - were not tried or punished. Only those who participated or called for participation in the pogroms were tried. Why the first victims of the pogroms were drinking houses, I have already explained.
                        Or here from the author:
in order to stimulate trips to drinking establishments, the prices for alcohol were reduced.

                        Ooh-ho ...
Prices were reduced because the peasants demanded it. Because they were exorbitantly overstated by the tax farmers. And then the ransom system was completely eliminated and prices fell on their own.
Although, here, of course, it would be a sin to deny that the income from alcohol was very significant for that Russian state. What to do - the serf system, the labor of the peasants cost nothing, and money is always money. With the abolition of serfdom, things began to change, but too slowly.
Likewise, the workers are yesterday's peasants, whom it was very easy to replace - so why not tear money from them, returning them, in fact, back to the hands of the manufacturer, soldering the workers right at the exit from the factory? If health ends, they will be fired, they will take a new one, the loss is not great, and let the old one die, as it happened in most cases.
And again - no politics, pure economy. Alas. smile

A very large hit on the Internet (went over the topic) for the vaccine, in many respects coincides with my intuitive ideas about this story. And, most importantly, nowhere do I see any reasonable "for", except that utilitarian considerations like "will be fired, will not be allowed until ... others." Well, the refusal of vaccination cannot be motivated by a ban on drinking alcohol for a while, either before or after.

And it is in this clinic that vaccinations are given. This means that despite the disinfection being carried out there, you can become infected with covid at a time. For the flow of visitors can not be divided into infected and uninfected. There is no such device! Covid can pass without temperature. And there is no ventilation in this clinic. I have a doctor / he is now a doctor, and as a child they drove the puck together in the yard, then it was clear the paths parted / So, the other day we crossed paths, then this, the fifth or tenth, and the conversation quietly turned to this topic. uncomplicated / like an instruction for a shovel /, I ask, well, how, buddy, do you shoot up or not? And he responded with a sickly hanger, so enticingly led and replied that, in principle, this is a personal matter. So that's it! He's a surgeon, but it's worth thinking

You are just the right person without all sorts of stupid reflections, which is a huge rarity in our time. And this does not depend on the use of alcohol. It depends on something else. The reason is apparently complex. Here I, for example, terribly reflect, and this is with an absolute non-use of booze. I went to the "Arms" to see Vyacheslav Olegovich, there a man said something, they gave him an unfriendly rebuke, but they could have made it all a joke. And that's all. I already have a stupor. I don’t dare to say anything there; I’ll suddenly get a cold, unfriendly shock. I'm not thick-skinned. Sometimes I think: maybe alcohol really removes excess brakes? )))

Sergey, golden words about the loss of self-control, I learned this from childhood, observing people. I also learned something else. People who drink heavily change their personality gradually. They give themselves indulgences, "no" turns into "can", and if at first a person is tormented by conscience, then over time it becomes silent. This, apparently, is the build-up of the skin. No, this is not given to me and I do not want to deliberately.

So, Seryozha, our historical forum is pursuing an ostrich policy. Having achieved a little prosperity, which our beloved friends subconsciously have shaky, they try to pretend that everything is fine, otherwise you will remember the devil, and he is here. And, perhaps, they will be able to preserve this prosperity due to ostentatious disregard for politics both under the current government and in the event of the collapse of the country. Tens of millions of people like me will not succeed. Therefore, I always conjugate antiquity with the current situation, which causes a stream of ill will on their part, which is not spoken aloud in the form of comments, but I can feel it! We belong to different strata of society - that's the trouble. And it is in the absence of a unifying goal. They think so. In fact, at the political forums of the VO, I fought for two years for small and medium-sized businesses, for farming, that is, for them, but they did not fight. But I shouldn't have done it. I realized this only a year ago, when the general tendency of world politics was fully manifested, I finally stuck my vile face out of the fog. There, in that new world, few people will find a place.

Sometimes it seemed to me that the "letters" remained exactly in my head. Time is a crafty thing. They don't stay! They change the meaning. I wrote it down. Time passes, I read notes in a thick notebook. God, what nonsense! Is it me? I stopped writing. Is that very short. How long you write, so frank delirium. The short reminds of what the attitude is being developed, it is realized that.

And since the phenomenon is repeated throughout life, but due to different circumstances it is not reproduced accurately, each time its shades evoke reflections that are not identical to the past, and sometimes directly contradict them. In ours, when the import of a population of any skin color and of any race is a matter of loyal legislation and the export of the Russian population abroad is his own business, there are no problems with drinking. This is now the business of grabbers-producers and traders.

Dear colleague, not necessary at all)))
Feast traditions. Saying at least some decent toast, if you say stupidity, will not be respected. The toast rises after a certain time after the previous one, and not so that right away - they say, well, let's go for the second one. Each participant of the feast is obliged to make a toast. A hearty snack between toasts. I watched this for many years. And if a person nevertheless felt drunk, he quietly retired and did not show himself to anyone until he was sober in order to preserve his reputation.

Alas, such traditions have hardly survived. They leave with the old generation. Quantity is preferred over quality. I knew people who quietly drank several liters of vodka at long feasts but were not drunk. Prostr, a slightly relaxed man in a completely adequate state jokes, dances and conducts conversations on philosophical topics. And the youth, looking at him, drank themselves into the trash trying to get drunk. What for? Show coolness? So to show it you need to be cool. The general cultural level also needs to be raised so that a person just enjoys the feast and does not arrange a competition.

Interesting article. The only pity is that the author, as usual, is very free in dealing with historical facts.
At the time of Peter I, the word "vodka" entered the Russian language. This was the name given to "bread wine" of low quality, a cup of which was included in the daily diet of sailors, soldiers, shipyard workers and builders in St. Petersburg (a cup is a hundredth part of the "official bucket", about 120 ml). At first this alcoholic drink was contemptuously called "Petrovskaya water", and then - even more pejoratively: "vodka".

The information in this paragraph is not true. To be convinced of this, it is enough to open the second volume of the "Complete collection of laws of the Russian Empire" on page 558 and read
the decree of Ivan V and Peter I "On the collection of duties on various wines and vodkas exported from overseas with efimkas, and with sugar in money, according to previous decrees" dated 4 (14) August 1684. In 1684, Peter the Great was twelve years old and he was still very far from building a fleet. In fact, Princess Sophia rules. The word "vodka" in the text clearly indicates that this term is well known to the composer of the text and not at all in the meaning that the author is talking about.
Bread wine was not included in the daily diet of sailors under Peter the Great. Beer was served daily. Bread wine was dispensed four times a week - half-baked at lunchtime, half-baked in the evening.

      Accuracy is indicated with percentages:
semi-alcohol (38% by volume, first mentioned in 1516), foamy wine (44,25%), triple (47,4%), double alcohol (74,7%)

Just wondering how they measured it?

There was then some kind of "operation" ... no, not N; and "annealing" ... 2 calibrated (with divisions) "bubbles" (tubes) of "bread wine" were poured into a special "standardized" ladle (annealer) ... the ladle was heated until bubbles appeared, then the "wine" was set on fire ... When the burning of the "drink" stopped, then the remaining liquid was poured into the "calibrated" tube ... the liquid should completely fill this tube! This meant that the "bread wine" had the "correct" (reference) strength! As it turned out later (when alcohol meters appeared in 20-30 of the 19th century ...), it was 38,5 grams. Such "bread wine" was called "semi-vygarnoe", "semi-lager", "semi-lager" ... "Polugar" was a reference fortress "wine" ... Other "bread wine" was "leveled" by it! (If less than half of the liquid remained in the "annealer", then the "face" was "undercooked" ... it could have been "fume"! Since the tubes were graduated, it was determined how much water should be added to lower the strength or add the proven "half-bar" to increase ...
"Foamy" wine ("penny") was defined as follows: they used the "foam test" (it was also called the "Dutch test"). It was carried out as follows: the wine was poured from “a certain height into the glass provided. If the wine is alcoholic, a thick foam will occur in the little finger, consisting of pure bubbles. The longer these bubbles hold, the more solid the wine means " The "pennik" fortress was 44,25 grams. and higher...!
By the way, I "out of habit" used the word "degrees" ... there is "percent" ... Often the authors of "alcoholic" articles do not see the difference in the designation of the fortress in "degrees" and in "percent" ...! And there is a difference! But this is a different "story", as Kanevsky says!

such articles are very much needed. Because the inhabitants of Russia must be taught that not drinking can be as good as drinking, but why then drink if this gradually breaks down life, but it is good only temporarily ... There is nothing shameful in such a teaching. You also need to explain to people that alcoholism is a very insidious disease.
However, I see very positive trends in Russia. I’ll say right away that I didn’t see how I gave it there now with the use of alcohol anywhere in Vologda, in Bryansk or in Ufa. But the last six years, before the pandemic, crossing Russia on vacation from St. Petersburg to Kislovodsk, and in the fall from St. Petersburg to Sochi in the spring, I see that the inhabitants of Russia began to drink much, much less. And this is very encouraging. Do not compare with what it was before. Drunk at train stations, on trains, on platforms, in sanatoriums, in squares and parks, on beaches. Thank God, this is disappearing. This means that the inhabitants of Russia are learning to understand that not drinking can be as good as drinking, but why then drink, if then the consequences are catastrophic.

Some noted that in modern Russia the number of drunkards has decreased and that terrible and illiterate consumption of alcohol according to the principle of "get drunk as soon as possible" is no longer there. I still remember how even N. Karachentsev, in an interview on the radio (dedicated, in fact, to the play "Juno and Avos"!), Suddenly declared that he did not care what to drink - as long as it was stronger. Under Yeltsin, there was a feeling of complete hopelessness, it seemed that Russia was "over", within one generation everyone was drinking and smoking. And then suddenly healthy forces in society prevailed. I myself was surprised when this my personal subjective feeling about positive tendencies was suddenly confirmed while working on the fourth article. There will be interesting statistics.

Kdollegi, Katka, read somewhere that before Peter, they added kvass to kvass: various herbs and due to this, kvass differed in the provinces.

Real homemade kvass - not a store-bought and not made from kvass wort concentrates, even in the post-war period differed by region.

I haven't seen anything like that because of my age ..
As a child I remember: barrels with the inscription: "Kvass". He in them was different in quality. I am in the 2nd grade, I preferred to go to Lenka. Near my classmate they sold good kvass, and the elders went: "to the cinema" - at kt "Severny", very tasty. They called him: "toothy"

You are confusing factory kvass, which was made according to the same technology, regardless of the region, and homemade, where each bottle has its own taste, since everything is unique. By the way, the factory kvass also tasted differently, if only because of the different water quality. Even in the same city, tap water is different in different areas.

In the Ryazan region, for example, white kvass was made in the villages, which is very different from the traditional "brown". I don't know if they are doing it there now, I haven't been there for a long time. I have not seen this anywhere else. As a child, I did not like this type of kvass, I loved the traditional barrel kvass, but by the end of school I tasted it. It is not sweet, less carbonated, more suitable for okroshka, but it quenched thirst very well. I thought that I would never try this kind of kvass, and suddenly in May I found a similar one in Pyaterochka. The taste is something close to the original, which was made by grandmothers. A few days later it disappeared, and today it was on the counter again.

I don’t remember the name, but you recognize it - it looks more like milk whey, maybe a sediment (you need to shake it up), the name is "non-brand". I didn't have a place for him, I'll buy it tomorrow. I warn you, the taste may seem strange. I found something very similar on the Internet, this is how it should look:

Well, now to the topic. I buy kvass, open the lid, for two minutes to release the gas into the refrigerator. Previously, they had a good variety of "With horseradish" in their line-up, but now, unfortunately, it is not.

    Recruits are shrinking
Recently, the St. Petersburg military presence noted the sharply conspicuous crushing of the capital's younger generation. Strong, healthy and strong young people of the draft age are encountered less and less frequently. The reasons are that the life of young people passes in the extremely unhygienic conditions of the capital. These people are born and grow up in damp and dirty basements, breathe the poisoned air of the backyards and have no idea about clean and healthy air.
But is one of the capital's population shrinking? Not! The rustic is also becoming shallow. One of the main reasons, apart from malnutrition, is vodka. Export of alcohol abroad is hampered by high duties, which have recently been imposed by foreign countries. Russia is drowning in the huge reserves of alcohol that have accumulated over the past years.

There was a very terrible famine. But the people in the villages preferred to make moonshine from grain, rather than bread. That's what the people have been driven to.

Valery, colleagues, I am very sorry for the answer to Viktor Nikolaevich. I wrote a commentary, and the head physician dropped in to us and I crumpled up.
This is how I wanted to write "Viktor Nikolaevich, you cannot live without a fly in the ointment for the hack."

Valery, you and V. Oh, are such authors that even if you do not agree, you should read carefully.
About Minich's campaigns. Let's be exact: there was practically no regular army before Peter I, and its own defense industry too. And under Minich there was already a regular army and a defense industry and officers were already there, and without all this .... there will be no business.
Regarding Bering's expedition: it was conceived even under Peter 1.

The main reason for the Prut catastrophe is the adventurism of Peter I. who managed to repeat all the mistakes of Charles XII on his way to Poltava. And then he himself admitted it.
About the Great Northern Expedition. You can plan anything. Including - an alliance with the pirates of Madagascar and the annexation of this island to Russia (the real project of Peter I). Practical preparation and implementation is another matter.
Anna Ioannovna's reign was not bad at all. Against the background of Catherine I and Elizabeth Petrovna - even good. But Elizabeth, who, calling things by their proper names, usurped power and imprisoned the legitimate and innocent infant emperor (who was to be “appointed” as a great martyr, and not Nicholas II and Alexandra) needed a “black legend” about the “queen of the terrible vision "and the bloody Russophobe monster Biron.
