"Specific deadlines are needed": NATO's "empty promises" criticized in Kiev
The hopes of Ukraine and Georgia for a NATO Membership Action Plan have again failed. The alliance summit did not bring anything but promises.
The leaders of the NATO countries supported the right of Kiev and Tbilisi to join the alliance, and on this good news over for Ukraine and Georgia. In a statement after the end of the summit, "allies and partners" were advised to continue the reforms, declared their "strong support" and promised that they would be admitted to NATO, but they did not say when. There were no specific dates, namely, this was sought in Kiev and Tbilisi.
The only thing that can be noted as "positive" for Ukraine is Biden's short answer "no" to the question: "Will the war in Donbas prevent Ukraine from joining NATO." But one cannot hope that the United States will support Ukraine's early entry into NATO.
In Kiev, of course, the decision of the summit was criticized, saying that they need a specific deadline for receiving an Action Plan for NATO membership, and not more promises. The notorious Oleksiy Arestovich, who is an adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, said that the Ukrainian authorities are not satisfied with "empty promises."
However, as they believe in Kiev, not all is lost, Ukraine may receive the NATO Membership Plan immediately after Biden's meeting with Putin. As the same Arestovich said, it’s just that the American leader hasn’t fully decided on his attitude to Russian politics and Putin, and after the meeting everything will fall into place. It remains only to wait for the results of the meeting and Brussels will gladly accept Ukraine into NATO, and the European Union in addition.
