Turkish analyst: US will lift sanctions against Ankara if Erdogan returns S-400 air defense system to Russia
In Turkey, before the start of the NATO summit (starts in Brussels), a possible easing of American sanctions is being discussed. As you know, the American side introduced these sanctions against Ankara for acquiring S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia with their subsequent deployment. The sanctions hit the Directorate of the Defense Industry, and Turkey was also withdrawn from the program to create fifth-generation F-35 fighters.
Turkey is now wondering whether Ankara will be able to convince Joe Biden that it would be worth lifting the previously imposed sanctions restrictions.
Turkish analyst Bulent Aliriza expressed his opinion on this matter. According to him, under current conditions, it is impossible to ease the sanctions imposed by the United States for the purchase of the S-400 from Russia. In fact, Aliriza broadcasts the American position, as she is the program director of the Washington Center for Strategic International Studies in Turkey.
According to him, the meeting between Erdogan and Biden in this regard will not solve anything, since Washington's position is tough. US sanctions will be lifted only if Turkey “deactivates the S-400 Triumph air defense systems purchased from Moscow.
Bulent Aliriza believes that Turkey will not be returned to the F-35 program, since the relevant laws were passed not by the US President, but by Congress. Therefore, even if Joe Biden personally is ready to make concessions to Erdogan, "nothing will come of it, since Biden has Congress behind him, and on the table in front of him is the decision of the Congressmen."
Aliriza:
The Biden administration insists that the lifting of restrictive measures is only possible if Turkey does not use Russian air defense systems in its air defense system or returns them to Russia.
