Israeli parliament approved a new prime minister, Netanyahu went into opposition
Benjamin Netanyahu from the prime minister of Israel has turned into the leader of the opposition. Netanyahu, who served as head of the Israeli Cabinet several times - from 1996 to 1999 and from 2009 to 2021 - resigned as prime minister.
A new government was formed, headed by former Netanyahu adviser Naftali Bennett, who became one of his main rivals.
Naftali Bennett, 49, heads the Yamina political group. It is a right-wing Israeli political alliance.
Naftali Bennett once headed the settlement council of Judea, Samaria and Gaza. In 2011, he co-founded the movement "My Israel" - a non-parliamentary association. A year later, under his leadership, a movement was formed, the name of which can be translated as "Israelites".
Naftali Bennett's rhetoric about the Russian Federation is noteworthy because it was usually based on issues of cooperation and close interaction. Bennett has repeatedly stated the need to strengthen friendly ties with Russia, noting that Israel is home to numerous people from both Russia itself and from a number of former Soviet republics. Bennett told reporters that his own great-grandfathers moved to the Middle East from the Russian Empire.
Naftali Bennett (a professional lawyer) was confirmed by a vote in parliament with a minimum margin: 60 votes in favor, 59 votes against.
Leaders of various countries congratulate Bennett on his election to the post of prime minister of Israel. One of the first, reportedly, was done by US President Joe Biden.
