Aircraft carrier "Varyag" may become part of the Chinese Navy under the name Liaoning
The former Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag may have the name of one of the provinces of China - Liaoning, the portal reports.News VPK "with reference to the forum of the Chinese website china-defense.com, which publishes an article from the English-language Chinese newspaper Global Times. In the article, an expert from the Chinese Institute of Naval Research Li Jie raised the topic of what the former Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag will be called after delivery the fleet and where will he be based. This article kicked off “active public comment,” writes the Global Times.
The expert predicted that the aircraft carrier would be named one of the country's provinces, and the ship should be based on several bases in order to increase the speed of use. Some experts believed that the ship would be named after an eminent public or military figure, as practiced in the United States. Traditionally, China gives large ships the names of provinces, small - cities and municipalities. The Ministry of National Defense of China called the speculations of Ji “speculations”, as there is still no consensus on this issue.
The aircraft carrier completed its ninth launch at sea and returned July 30 to the port of Dalian (Liaoning Province). Ji believes that the main systems of the ship successfully passed a series of tests, and will soon be included in the PLA Navy (as an example, he cites the fact that the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was accepted into the United States Navy after 10 sailing). On the deck were seen two mock-ups of life-size aircraft. The expert believes that although the takeoffs and landings of the aircraft on the deck were not carried out, this is of “minor importance”. In response, Liu Daguang, a military expert at the National University of Defense PLA, said that entry into the fleet could occur only after successful takeoffs and landings of aircraft, although similar tests were already performed on the ground flight deck simulator.
Earlier it was reported that the aircraft carrier will be accepted into the fleet in early August in honor of the 85 anniversary of the PLA or 1 of October on the anniversary of the founding of the PRC. Colonel of the General Directorate of Arms of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Lin Bai, said that tests of the aircraft carrier were proceeding successfully, and the Navy achieved "the desired results." The ship will be used for personnel training and research. It is reported that an aircraft carrier can carry about 30 aircraft and helicopters, the crew will be approximately 2000 people.
According to one of the forum participants, it would be logical to give the aircraft carrier the name of the province of Liaoning, which includes the port of Dalian. It was here that the ship was repaired, modernized, and from here goes to sea for testing. Previously, there were reports that the aircraft carrier had already received the unofficial name "Shi Lan" in honor of the great Chinese admiral who conquered the island of Taiwan in the era of the Qing Empire (Shi Lang, 1621 – 1696).
