How the US electoral system works
The year 2020 finally makes it clear that the system of democratic elections for US presidents is actually no more democratic than elections, for example, of the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee. There is also a candidate, the people also vote, they also practically do not decide anything. And as the famous writer used to say, if something really depended on the elections, we would not be invited to them.
Due to the fact that the dispute between the candidates for the main post in the United States continues to this day and each of them declares himself the winner, it is worth taking a closer look at the American electoral system itself. And there are many interesting things in it.
Its most important difference from many others is that it is elitist by definition. Both in relation to candidates and in relation to those who actually elect - the so-called electors.
A few basic requirements for a US presidential candidate. He must be a citizen of that country by birth. He must also have lived in the United States for at least 14 recent years. Interesting numbers - 14 years. Age limit - from 35 years old.
Recently, as the Americans themselves joke, this qualification can be doubled.
One way or another, US presidential elections are held almost constantly. Starting with the internal party primaries and ending with direct elections with one of the longest vote counts in the world, as practice shows. It's not a joke: in India, with its population of almost 4 times the population of the United States, the vote count was carried out many times faster.
About the election system in the United States, about who can become an American president at all, about how everything works in this regard - in the expert's story:
