US Congress may increase military assistance to Ukraine, but cut back on Georgia
The United States may increase military assistance to Ukraine by $ 2021 million in fiscal year 25. This proposal was made by the appropriation committee of the US House of Representatives, the draft military budget says.
According to representatives of the committee, next year Ukraine needs to allocate 275 million dollars, which is 25 million more than in 2020. Earlier it was reported that in 2021, military assistance to Kiev was expected in the region of $ 250 million. However, the issue of increasing the amount of military assistance has not yet been finally resolved. Before it is signed by the President of the United States, the document has to go through a very complicated approval process.
It is proposed to spend the increased amount on training the personnel of the Ukrainian army, providing weapons, logistic support, intelligence support to the military and the "national security forces" of Ukraine. The Pentagon, which characterizes Ukraine as "a key US partner at the forefront of strategic competition with Russia," advocates increased military assistance.
If news If Ukraine is likely to increase military assistance, it will delight Ukraine, the next one, which also came from the US Congress, can greatly upset another US partner - Georgia. The thing is that the Congress proposed to cut back assistance to Tbilisi, and immediately by 15%.
The US military budget for 2021 includes Georgia’s military assistance in the amount of 132 million dollars. However, Congress believes that it should be cut back, as Tbilisi does not comply with all US instructions. But this amount can be left unchanged if the US State Department provides evidence of the effective policy of the Georgian government "to strengthen democratic institutions and the fight against corruption, as well as protecting foreign investors."
