Long-range drone tested in the USA

UAV AFRL ISR

In the United States have been tested relatively inexpensive drone long flight duration. As transmits "NPlus1" With reference to Breaking Defense, during the tests, the unmanned vehicle spent 2,5 days in the air.

Reportedly, the drone was developed by specialists from the Center for Rapid Innovation of the US Air Force Research Laboratory. The basis of the new drone is taken from a glider of a sports remote-controlled model, the manufacturer and type are not indicated. This glider is equipped with automatic flight, take-off and landing systems, as well as equipment for placing the payload, which is installed on a modular basis.

Details of the development were not disclosed, the US military classified information about the propulsion system of the device, which allows it to be in the air for more than 2,5 days. Also, the dimensions of the apparatus, its mass and other parameters are not known.

It is known that the development of this drone model by specialists of the US Air Force Research Laboratory took about 10 months, the tests began in early December this year, they are scheduled to be completed next year.

The cost of the device is relatively not high, it can range from 20 to 140 thousand dollars, depending on the commercial glider used. For comparison, the cost of U.S. reconnaissance drones capable of being in the air for a long time is given. So the MQ-1C Gray Eagle, capable of being in the air for up to 25 hours, costs about 25 million dollars, and the RQ-4 Global Hawk, designed to fly up to 36 hours, costs 131 million dollars.

The developers plan to start deliveries of a new one at the end of 2020. drone to the troops. It is assumed that it will be used for reconnaissance purposes.

Perhaps it will install a hybrid power plant, and a large wingspan will effectively accommodate solar panels. IMHO

Such UAVs will probably be used as communication repeaters duplicating satellite communications, and they will not be located above the enemy, but behind the first line of their troops.

Drones with a long range and we need the same. And not necessarily the military even. Monitor the taiga for example, even at night, at least during the day and poachers and black lumberjacks will be visible.

The cost of one hour of flight of the "Reaper" is 15 thousand. $ laughing
For the cost of 1 flight (max 24 hours), you can hire a company of foresters for the same time and they will not only "monitor the taiga", but also carry out detentions and write out protocols!

In general, a long and narrow wing works better at high altitudes, in terms of aerodynamics.

To be honest, with the modern development of all-spectral satellite optics, I don’t quite understand which Yankees needed this device. The optics of modern monitoring satellites allow you to read small newspaper text from orbit, the main thing is to know where to look. Impact drones, yes. Small-sized over the battlefield for infantry , yes too. But specifically, this device is not clear. It won’t replace AWACS, it’s not the carrying capacity, the speed is low for a full-fledged air reconnaissance. All the advantage comes down only to the time spent in the air, but its satellites do not beat.

Contrary to Hollywood, satellites are not able to hang over one point, nor do they cover the entire earth at once. And the team, give me a picture from the satellite, can be executed at all in a few hours and even then for a few minutes. But this papelats was taken out in advance to the area and he hangs there himself calmly, works. And about the price of the flight and say nothing.

Satellite constellations are created in such a way that when one goes beyond the horizon, the next one already occupies its place. Geostationaries generally hang in one place. A device can be paraded within one specific area only in two cases: If it is allowed to, or the enemy fights only in Kalash and RPG. Any anti-aircraft missile defense system, even of the strictest models like Dvina, will remove it as a standing one.

SOVA unmanned aerial vehicles are being developed by the Tiber Research and Production Enterprise. The creators call their brainchild an "atmospheric satellite". The wing span of the electric apparatus is 28 meters, the flight height is up to 20 km. Solar panels are used as a power source. The device is designed for surveillance and aerial reconnaissance. During the tests, the SOVA drone was in the air for more than 50 hours.

Yes, the first experimental Owl was lost:
A long flight took place at an altitude of about 20 thousand meters. Unfortunately, the device got into a zone of strong turbulence and was seriously damaged. "

By the time the device crashed, the developers received all the necessary data, were convinced of both the prospects of the research area itself and the correctness of the chosen design solutions. Now work is underway on a longer barrage at altitudes of 20, supplementing with hydrogen fuel cells (TRTE).

These works are no longer conducted by Tiber, but by another concern ...

And so, the technologies worked out - if there is a desire, they will apply.

The plane took off from the 4600-meter strip of Edwards Airbase in Mojave on December 14, 1986 and landed safely on it on December 23, after 9 days, 3 minutes and 44 seconds. During the flight, the aircraft covered 42 km (FAI set off a distance of 432 km) at an average altitude of 40 km.

They are in Syria and do not fly. They fly over Lebanon, and there is no air defense there.
When the Turks shot down the Su-24 and the pilot died, why didn’t Putin bomb Turkey?

He has brains and knows how to use them. The conflict was settled. Yes, so ruled that now the Turks are going to kick out amers from their territory. If then they had gone along the Jewish path "tit for tat", there would not have been such a thing.

Now in the US military development a new trend is to use what is in the civilian world, and if not suitable, then create it. If the military GPS satellite is broken / shot down, hundreds of civilian satellites will relay the signal. Now many civilian satellites will be launched (forced) with a relay function. So here - they took the existing device into development and stuffed it with their devices - quickly / economically / conveniently ...
“The U.S. Air Force said:“ Ultra LEAP also has safe, easy-to-use GPS anti-jamming navigation and full global operational access via satellite command and control system and high-speed ISR data channel. ”
AFRL Project Engineer Paul Litke said high-performance UAS will contribute to mission success on the battlefield.
Litke added that the use of off-the-shelf commercial components in Ultra LEAP will provide significant savings in maintenance costs.
It is expected that the aircraft will be ready for operational deployment by 2020.
The system automation function allows you to reduce operator training needs and lower operating costs.
Dr. Alok Das, director of the AFRL Center for Rapid Innovation, said: “Completed in just 10 months of development by our AFRL / industry team, today's 2,5-day Ultra LEAP mission is an important milestone in addressing distance tyranny for ISR systems.
“This will provide immediate benefits to our commandos while paving the way for future low-cost, multi-day, long-life ISR systems.”
An approach to using the market for commercial vehicles offers reduced production and platform costs. ”

There are no electric motors there. There is an internal combustion engine, small power, and a folding propeller.
On batteries, this power / weight ratio has not yet been achieved. And solar panels only worsen this ratio, they weigh a lot and give little electricity.
