The storm of the White House: memories of the commander of the Alpha group about the events of October 1993

26 years have passed since the events unfolding in Moscow tanks right in the center of the capital. Until now, in historiography there is no single designation for those events. Some prefer to call them the “October putsch”, others “the Yeltsin coup”.

In those events, representatives of the authorities and law enforcement agencies (legitimate and illegitimate) came together on opposite sides of the barricades. The country was actually on the verge of a civil war.

On the side of Yeltsin were Tamanskaya and Kantemirovskaya divisions, a special unit "Vityaz".

Today, one of the participants in those events, the former commander of the Alpha group, Gennady Zaitsev, recalls the events of October 1993 in our country. In an interview with TacticMedia, Hero of the Soviet Union, Major General Zaitsev talks about the actions carried out by his unit.

Major General Gennady Zaitsev:

Were raised by alarm 3 October 93 year. A command was given to arrive in the Kremlin, and we spent the whole night in the armchairs of the State Kremlin Palace. Together with the Vympel commander, we had to come to the Minister of Defense Pavel Grachev and coordinate actions on October 4 to storm the White House.
