USA decided to equip all Warthogs with a new wing

61
Boeing Corporation has committed to equipping the entire fleet of American A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft with a new wing. The corresponding contract with the Ministry of Defense worth $ 999 million was executed on Wednesday.

This glider update will affect the 109 Warthogs, three more wings will be made in reserve. Earlier, from 2011 year, an agreement was implemented on the production of the specified structural element for 173 aircraft. Earlier this month, the entire order was completed. The new front of operations is supposed to last until August 2030.

As noted by news Military.com portal, a total of 281 A-10 units are in service with the US forces. In recent years, two cars have been lost (collided in the air in 2017).

Aircraft deployed in the 1976 year and deployed in the Middle East, Europe and the Pacific played a huge role in the air campaign launched in the 2014 year against ISIS *, helping to provide air support to Iraqi and American ground forces

- indicates the designated publication, explaining that in addition, A-10 proved to be in air operations in Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, the Soviet Union suffered significant losses from MANPADS shipped mainly from the United States in connection with this issue. Where did they successfully use their warthogs with at least minimal air defense? Zushka does not count.

The Americans got a good car. All the same, they understand at the Pentagon that only stealth and UAVs can’t win any war .. And they continue to prepare for a large-scale war .. Yes, and it’s worthless to lag behind in the preparation and modernization of the army and navy ..

Specialists, explain what "new" wing means? A redesign or just a replacement for tired metal?
According to my information, one attack aircraft cost 18 million evergreens. Let inflation and now it is 30. And here it turns out about 10 lyam only for the wings.

structural change, change in the materials of the nodes and power elements of the wing (stringers, spars, etc.), change in the area of the wing, change in the attachment points of the center section, etc.

Most likely they decided to kill two birds with one stone. Replace old wings that have accumulated metal fatigue that does not allow further operation and at the same time upgrade the design.

I don’t think that they are changing the attachment point .. - this is too serious an alteration of not only the planes, but the fuselage also needs to be picked .. Otherwise, yes ... the load there is serious, it may well be redone for new missiles, yes and given the age of the machine and the application experience, they probably found some solutions to strengthen the wing ...

Metal fatigue was revealed there, which is why they change. The machine was really successful, so these costs will pay off. True, I will remain of my opinion - in vain they made a plane around the gun. For the most part, this six-barreled monster flies with a passenger.

Metal fatigue was revealed there, which is why they change.

Yes of course. Why write if you don’t know? If fatigue occurs in the metal, then the knot is usually changed. In the wing, it most often occurs in places of the most frequent and constant stresses - that is, in the center section area, in the places of attachment of wing spars and fuselage frame. It is there, on the ear-plug, that stress concentration most often occurs. To eliminate fatigue deformations, the entire wing is not required to be replaced. It's too expensive. Modernization of the wing of the A-10 is a transition to a lighter wing (due to replacement with aluminum) with better mechanization.

In the 2011 year there was a debate in general about keeping the A-10 in service, the planes are old and apparently not only morally, there were problems. However, there is nothing to replace them with, so the modernization program was adopted, as you said with the replacement of the wing. And now we turn on the logic: the glider of the aircraft, this is the most durable in its composition, often change the giblets. And here, right on the go, a whole wing for a replacement for no reason, because there are no alternatives to the A-10? They would have done some money, they would have made the Thunderbolt 3 with improved characteristics and without a bulky gun for half the plane. But no ... And apparently the replacement of the nodes would not have cost.

This is understandable, but it is also needed to detect targets on the ground, not only to work on backlighting. For example, there was an article about the Su-25, here is an excerpt:
The possibility of equipping attack aircraft with the MF2 airborne radar station is being considered, ”a source in the defense industry told the agency.
According to him, "the Fazotron-NIIR corporation plans, in particular, to adapt the MF2 radar for installation on a modernized two-seat Su-25UB attack aircraft.
        Small-sized onboard dual-purpose radar station “Kogitor” (MF2)
The station is installed on aircraft and provides round-the-clock and all-weather information of the required level of detail (down to detailed, which allows not only to detect, but if necessary, to recognize the type and type of object)
