Bundeswehr began upgrading tanks to the version of Leopard-2 A7V
101 The Leopard-2 main battle tank of the A6M A2 and A6 variant must be upgraded to a level similar to the latest Leopard-2 A7V. The goal is to adapt to Leopard-2 A7V in terms of operation and logistics.
The entire cycle of work must be completed before the 2026-th year. The Department of Defense also stated that tank systems will be standardized to make them more efficient, increase protection and allow crew exchanges.
About the project of modernization of tanks in service with the Bundeswehr, they started talking about 3 years ago. At the moment, the German army is armed with 225 tanks, their number should increase to 320.
In September, 2017, the information was published that Rheinmetall received an order to participate in the modernization of the 104 Leopard 2 battle tanks. Judging by the delivery time, the voiced tranches were allocated to finance this particular program.
Tracked vehicles had to be brought to the level of Leopard-2 A7V. The total cost of the upgrade package and other services was about 118 million euros.
Rheinmetall upgrades a total of 68 Leopard 2 A4, 16 Leopard 2 A6 and 20 Leopard 2 A7 to the modern version of A7V. The order includes the replacement of an outdated fire control system and computer control panel, a software update, and the installation of a new eye-safe laser range finder. A new thermal imaging device will also be added.
The work that Rheinmetall will carry out is part of a project to increase the number of Leopard 2 already in the ranks of the Bundeswehr. In addition to the upgrading elements already mentioned, Rheinmetall is also responsible for the supply of a new weapon system with improved L55A1 characteristics. It will be equipped with 68 Leopard 2 A4.
As for the guns, tanks equipped with new guns will be able to fire the next generation of armor-piercing ammunition in the higher pressure range. According to Rheinmetall, all 104 A7V Leopard-2 can then use the new DM11 programmable multipurpose munitions that have already been purchased by several NATO countries.
The first converted serial battle tank Leopard 2 A7V will be delivered to the 2020 year. It is not clear why the initial data differs from the current data, but other large-scale information on the modernization of the MBT has not been received. It is possible that the 3 tank was re-equipped as part of the preparation of the technological process for mass modernization, which is common practice.
In addition, the Budget Committee agreed to purchase about 32 thousand 155 mm caliber shells for the PzH-2000 self-propelled howitzer. Shells will be delivered by 2023 in eight batches.
DM121 projectiles are designed to more effectively combat conventional and lightly armored targets, as well as infrastructure in the long-range positions. Ammunition is crucial for the rapid deployment of the Panzer Howitzer 2000 howitzer to mobile combined teams. Replenishment of ammunition volumes is necessary to restore the spent shells and maintain the minimum stock required by the NATO treaty.
